What about from 1978 on with Taraki - wasn't that a big change, even before the Soviets imposed their ways and puppet Karmal?
All the way to the end of Najib in '96 - that was pretty long altogether.
Of course those really dedicated Marxist-Leninists were in a tiny fraction of the population.
One wonders if even THEY believed in what they were preaching. Or it was just an intellectual fad...Or there were attractive bonuses like bottles of vodka offered for going along with the Sovs...
I am striving to get a better awareness of that time compared with others, and in retrospect as the dust falls into place and one can see better what was going on from the distance of years.
i can remember the time of hafizullah amin ,the time russians were leaving, najibullah time the coup by nationalists against najibullah, the fall of kabul, the civil war.i could tell you in much detail, just ask anything you like to know.

Well, what was it like living there then?
What things are most strongly in your memory?
Was it fun at all, or every moment was filled with fear?

i didnt mean hafizullah amin but babrak karmal

i was very small when russian swere still there,my granma used to call me mujahid LOL

i remember when i used to live in a normal places(clay houses etc) and i remeber living in one of the most modern places.
i can remember almost everything very clear an dive to say the time when mujahideen entered kabul an dstarted the civil war was the most terrifying.
we used to spend days in basement of our buildings and one thing i can never forget is how the running water didnt work and we were to find water.people were so cooperating with eachother i mean the civilians the mujahideens factions were busy fighting eachother and each day you would witness somone dead in one the houses(this was at the time of fall of kabul and civil war).

we used to play outside whenever we didnt hear any missiles or bullets once day we were playing soccer all up sudden we heard heavy gun fire probably 50mm rounds ,we kept palying cuz that wouldnt stop us from playing soccer.and than we heard the flute sound of the missile incoming thats when we all dropped ourselves to the ground and hands on the head(thats the drill to survive a missile strike unless it falls on you).
and when the missil fell we got up and starting playing further.
