  • Londonzai/ Pashtun American or Pashtun Canadians.....

When Kunar introduced the 'Lodonzai Tribe' in his post, and Barakzai Abdali used the word Pashtun American, every one took it as a joke. Some people living in Afghanistan or Khyber Pukhtunkhwa claim only themselves Pakhtuns as though it is their personal property. Whoever left those regions, are out cast, no more Pakhtun!

Pakhtuns had been migrating since we know about the history. In the present time, those who migrated or born and are living outside those boundaries, have the right to establish their claim to be Pakhtuns, relating to their present geographical regions. Why to be prisoners of Afghanistan or Pakistan. Wherever we live, we are Pakhtuns and we do not need the approval of people of those two countries.

Why should we attach our loyalty to those countries. We are sympathetic to their present condition and unfortunate circumstances but we are not subject to their way of thinking. We are free and more independent then they are.

Pakhtuns living in America, have all the rights to identify themselves "Pakhtun Americans" or Londoners " Londonzai". I count myself "Pakhtun Canadian" and I am proud of it. Those who can not appreciate this attitude of ours, who cares for their thinking. In Canada, Germans are known as German Canadians, likewise Irish Canadian, Indian Canadians, Pakistani Canadians and so on. I am a Pakhtun Canadian, and I don’t like to be called Afghan or Pakistani. Ancestral linage in one thing, and political or regional affiliation is other. I don’t want to affiliate my political or emotional loyalties to those countries or people there. Language is for communication, not for pride or honor. I can speak Pashtu, but my children and grand children can not. They are educated in English and comfortable with English and it is the language of my present country. Still me and my family are and my coming generation will be Pakhtuns. A Pakhtun is a Pakhtun, not because of the language. If a Paktune can speak Pashtu, well and good, it is a credit. If he can not, does not mean he is an out cast. Those of you who have this kind of thinking, keep it. I will not ask for your approval. My ancestral linage is mine, it is not yours and your ancestral linage is yours, I am not claiming it. Your thinking is yours not mine.

If Pakhtuns of London identify themselves Londonzai, they are well justified and have grown out of any sort of complexes and they have a right to think so. It might look funny to most of you, but it is a reality and fact. They do not need your approval. You like it or not, it is the way they want to identify theselves......

I like you're way of thinking.

But, when your children or grandchildren one day say "Let's go to Af/Pak" and they can't speak Pashto, how are they supposed to communicate? Most people there speak Pashto/Dari/Farsi/Urdu. Doesn't that bother you? I think they would be looked down upon if they cannot speak Pashto. Just my opinion.

EDIT: Personally, I wouldn't blame someone who is raised in Europe or America if he can't speak Pashto or not. Ultimately... I think It's the parents duty and responsibility to make sure their children do not lose their culture and language.

No. English is very common every where. They will communicate. It won't be a big problem. If any one learns it, it will be a credit. Learning any language other than the one you speak is a credit.

Yes, and their mothertongue should be Pashto not English.

May i ask, if you can speak Pashto, why didn't you teach them Pashto? Did you talk in English at home when they were growing up? This is how people lose their language and culture because no one around them practices it.
