Is me being a Pashtun who's religion is Hindu a problem?
there are certain aspects of Pashtunwali, that contradicts with islam. You being a Hindu does not negate you from being a pashtun. In the past their were many pashtun that were hindu, My grandfather used to tell me that before Islam, that people in our area of Afghanistan worshipped fire, that didnt make my ancestors non pashtun. -
HinduPashtun Namastey,Salam, au Pakhair,
Majority here does not represent the view of all Pashtuns in the world. I am pretty surprised with their narrow-minded thinking.Yesterday Sangar declared "Dr.Anarkali Honaryar", the Sikh female election candidate as prostitute with his logically fallacious interpretation of her name without knowing the fact that she considers herself a proud brave Afghan who have done amazing things at such a young age and that too in Afghanistan (considering the ground realities)!!! Do you think that if someone calls her prostitute, and by both definitions of "prostitute and non-pashtun (because she is not muslim) will take away her Afghan identity? Majority of Pashtuns are muslims but that does not make them superior Pashtuns (e.g.,I consider Pashtun Talibans as stigma). Yes, Islam is important for an average Pashtun but an average Pashtun is also not satisfied with just muslim identity. An average pashtun without severe brainwashing by Talibans/Mullahs's intolerant version of Islam will not never abuse your Pashtun idenity based on my experiences.
Why will you take their words seriously if they tell you that your hindu identity contradicts your Pashtun idenity? They are yet to come out of their own contradictions in first place. Everyone has their own branded version of Islam and Pashtunwali (read the posts in this forum). In fact I was surprised why many here are so intolerant towards Shi'a Pashtuns? For instance, the Bangash (Shi'a) Pashtuns consider themselves proud Pashtuns. We have Sikh Pashtuns families who have been living with us peacefully for a long time and they also consider themselves as Pashtuns.Of course, Talibans did not spare them and so the Sikh community of the Orakzai (some 35 families) has to leave the Feroz Khel area because they could not arrange arrange Rs.150 million demanded by the Taliban of Pakistan last year.No matter how many times someone tells me that those Talibans are Pashtuns, I would never approve that. How do Talibans qualify as Pashtuns when they wage a war against their fellow Pashtun brothers? or when they kill women and kids? Doesn't that contradict Pashtunwali? For me,it is pretty unreasonable to think that a belief in God, or a belief in particular God is mandatory to qualify as Pashtun. This statement, of course, does not make any sense to nonsecular Pashtuns.Last edited by PFgulalai; 09-20-2010, 10:08 PM."O Pakhtuns!, Your house has fallen into ruin, let us rebuild it".

Sorry about that. I hope I have not made you think that!!! I don't think I have the authority to determine who is Pashtun or not because technically speaking my family is no longer considered Pashtun because they left Afghanistan!!!Originally posted by hindupashtunNamastay,
I am Hindu by faith but I consider my self a proud Afghan/Pashtun. Is that a problem as far as Pashtunwali goes? I follow Pashtunwali, we have melmastiyas, nanawatees and in Kandahar I was taught how to speak, write and read in Pashto. We even have a Pashto poetry class in Kandahar.
I even was taught Islam in my high school in Kandahar. A member had onced said here that me being a hindu is a problem with being a Pashtun since they contradict.
Those that object please come forward with honest response.
Do you rigidly follow Pashtunwali? In regards to the discussion I had on Shiism, I was pointing out that a common practice of Shiite Islam contradicts Pashtunwali. I kind of now want to know if Shiite Pashtuns practice it or not.
Bro, sorry if I made you feel left out. I also feel bad for the Pashtun Shiite who are on the forum. I was just trying to explain a contradiction, and also some of the other issues of contention I have, but I don't think i have the merit credentials yet to do this.

If it's not a problem for you, don't worry about what others say. Especially not people who aren't your peers.
Don't let others define your identity and don't allow anyone to define who you are. Search, explore, find yourself. See what you're most comfortable with. Once you got that straight, do not let anyone interfere with your definition of who you are.
If you have doubts about your religion, by all means, research and explore.
But don't ask others what about you causes a problem for them because for one, they will always find issues and secondly, they will induce doubts that weren't there before and that will result in the creation of useless problems. They will tell you you're not Pashtun and then they will proceed to talk enough to make you doubt your identity until you get to a point where you feel as lost as a human being can feel because you do not have a sense of identity.
You're more Afghan than many people here ever will be. Be aware of that and don't you dare ever forget that, no matter how much they tell you you're not. YOU define yourself, not they and their perceptions of the world.

What tribe do Hindu Pashtuns come from? Do you people know your history? How do you people know you are Pashtuns? Could some Hindus just have settled in Kandahar and that's why they learned Pashto? Do Hindu Pashtuns look like the other Pashtuns? I always heard Pashtuns were zoroastrian before Islam so how is it that some are Hindu? I thought people have to be born Hindu so how did it ever happen that a Pashtun was born Hindu?

You are very deserving of everyone's best wishes and regards.
Who is your favorite among the gods?
Don't tell anyone, but I found a picture of Shiva I took years ago in Delhi which I keep in one of my front windows. It was to protect the house. Not Shiva Nataraja but a very unique one. I used to always tell my friends that he can remove OBSTACLES on one's road or in one's life.

One thing you have to understand that more than anything, Pukhtoons admire confidence and diligence. We call that ghairat, and I think you know that too. hindupashtun, show some ghairat in who you are, as in a Hindu. If you falter, and become shaky then you can't change anyones mind especially that of Pukhtoons. You speak Pukhto, you do Pukhto, you were born midst Pukhtoons on Pukhtoon khawra, and you consider yourself a Pukhtoon....no one can take that away from you. In Pukhtoon society, Pukhtoonyat many times is earned. You can't earn yours if you are having second thoughts. Stand your ground.

Before anything, the common link between us all is that we are human. And thus, before anything, and above everything, we share that relationship, of insaaniyat which should eliminate the superiority and minority notions. There is no such thing. If anything, such relationships are encouraged by our faith where Allah tells us that He created us into different tribes and people, so that we may know each other and come to common terms. Yes, though, as Pakhtuns we consider some aspects of our culture and values above that of others. You must agree, they are quite unique (both right and wrong) but that doesn't make any other culture flawed or incomplete. We all have shortcomings, no one is perfect. The other part of your concern has been addressed well by other members, so I will leave it at saying that your presence here is more than welcome and always a pleasure following your very worth-reading contributions.
