  • The word 'Pathan'

I'd rather poke pins in my eyes that be forced to call myself Pathan.

I've hated that word since the day I was born and was lying there in the hospital incubator.

    Why?

    1. Because its a distortion of Pashtoon/Pakhtoon.

    2. Because it is what Indic people (lazily) call us and in today's day and age it is not used with respect.

    3. Because the colonial Europeans picked this up and reinforced the false idea that Pathans = Barbaric Animals and that you could get their loyalty if you trained them into submission like you do with a dog

    4. Because it stems from a mindset that allowed Africans to be called ******s and Native Americans Red/Injun.

Being Indian doesn't stop a person from being Pashtoon.

There is nothing wrong with the name Khan. It's Turkic, originally central Asian/Mongolian (example Chingiz Khan) and is found across the Central Asian Plateau, including China where the local variation is pronounced similar to Han (Japanese Kan).

If you are a Khan and it is a hereditary name, then you have very big family considering that China has a population of over 1.3 billion people and Han falls safely within the top 30 most popular names within the country.

        But back to point.

It's unfortunate that you called yourself Pathan, because as soon as I saw your name, I had the pins ready.

I still remember how a Pashtun once told me, He is not Pashtun, He is a Pathan in Pashto. I asked what's the difference, The response was " We are from Pekhawar "

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Aah ... what was your advice about non-Pashto speakers being told to take a hike.

I believe in regular people or those who make a humanitarian contribution to society, so I don't eulogise Indian film stars. I'm one of the few people I know who would DARE to tell a global superstar to take a hike based on the former.

I wouldn't say that to ShahRukh Khan perhaps because he comes across as someone slightly different. That said he's a "dropped" Pashtoon, and in all honesty is probably what we would today call a "Pathan". That is the kind/unkind thing to call him and he may utter a few rehearsed words of Pashto.

Those are the khaariyaan people...even those hindko pathans in hazara division (not batagram, thor ghraa or oghi) call themselves pathan. However the pashtuns of Pashtunkhwa say Pashtun. The only time they might say pathan is if they are speaking in urdu. I have never called myself a pathan nor do I remember anyone back home call themselves that.

You seem to have harsh feelings towards the better, although I dont understand where its coming from I guess its from experience? I dont understand whats negative about it, Especially when in Pakistan,

When you say are Pashtuns they say you are Afghan. But when you say you are Pathan that means you are Pakistani Pashtun. I know its wrong. I just want to learn more about it. That is why I am here.
                        Who's they?

Who are you, as a Pashtoon, answerable to?

                          Starey mashey wrora,

Okay, so based on your post, Pashtun and Pathan are not the same thing? They are different? Who decides the difference? Does the definition differ from person to a person? Is this a commonly accepted fact in Pashtunkhwa exclusively?

A poll is unnecessary we are one nation same people.

But if someone calls me a Pathan I will feel disrespected and un happy
