  • Pashtun Jirga in Karachi sentences a couple to be electrocuted to death

Pakistan 'honour killing': Karachi teen lovers 'were electrocuted' - BBC News

Zia Ur Rehman, a reporter for The News newspaper, which broke the story on Saturday, told the BBC that the families had reached a settlement in accordance with their tribal traditions.

"Under the settlement, the couple were to wed and the boy's family would give the hand of two of its women in marriage to two men of the girl's family as the price of honour.

"But a jirga called to endorse this settlement on 15 August rejected it and ordered the couple to be killed as a lesson to others."

Police officer Aman Marwat told the BBC that the relatives arrested "said that both the victims were drugged and then given electric shocks after being tied to a cot".

He said that Bakht Jan left her home secretly on 14 August, but the family found her hours later at a nearby house waiting for Rehman, who had not yet arrived.

It seems to me Pashtuns in Karachi are undergoing Pathan-ization. Jirgas issuing death sentences and acting kingly? strange

This is what the Ghag was originally all about. The guy should have done Ghag on the girl and all this would have been avoided.

I thought Jirgas do give death penalties.

No , it does not. You must have been reading Pakistani news in which term Jirga is used from panchayats of Sindh and Punjab (or those in Abbottabad and Kohistan which made headlines).

The traditional and proper role of Pashtun jirga in such cases is that of arbitration, in which an arbitrator is appointed by rival/opposite parties or families in order to resolve their issues.

Now whats going on in Afghanistan or how much role of jirga has been modified there, i have no idea. Also i dont know much about the FCR's jirgas.

Thanks for correcting me. On Reddit Karachiwal Muhajirs were complaining about "migrants" bringing these practices to Karachi. I reminded them that they themselves came from India so they had no right to call others migrants.

Yara jirgas don't give death sentences?Even if one person murders another?

Edit: I think I get your point. The purpose of jirga is to avoid bloodshed so they come up with a solution that avoids killing anyone.

If person X openly murders Y. Then its upon Y's family to avenge the murder.

Lets say what you are saying happens and some gathering calling itself jirga decides to act as judge and decides that X should be killed because he has murdered Y. Then that gathering will be considered by X's family to be the enemy along with Y's family.

Moreover in case of settled areas of Pakistan, any gathering issuing death sentences, acting as parallel court, has committed a crime and will be arrested.

It's the same in Afghanistan. The whole point of Jirgas is to try to resolve problems through arbitration instead of capital punishment. In the past, when there was something like a murder that couldn't be resolved through arbitration, the government would be involved to arrest/execute the perpetrator. Now that the central government is extremely weak, either the Taliban carry out the punishment, or the victim's family gets revenge themselves. In neither case does the Jirga make themselves kings and doles out death penalties.

If it's a clear case of murder that can't just be forgiven through a Jirga, the victim's family would either get the government/Taliban involved, or get revenge themselves.

Jirgas aren't courts or police. Their job isn't to carry out Hudud punishments, but rather to try to resolve problems without having to resort to any capital punishments.

He is wrong. A jirga can pass capital punishment. It happens all the time, just google it.
