  • Kabul 1970s, were Pashtuns modernized too, or just Tajiks?

Now I know this was only Kabul, while rest of the country nowhere near this modern, but from these pics, Kabul looks pretty much like a European capital in the same timeframe (1970s). I like it, people and the atmosphere looks very progressive, almost Utopian considering the current state of Afghanistan. Wonder where Afghanistan would be today if Soviets didn't invade.

It's really a shame to see this as a distant past.

Because majority of Pashtuns are muslims and conservative by nature. Wearing mini skirts and exposing body parts not allowed by Islam or Pashtun culture. It is looked down upon and those who defy these rules are considered fake and Kam Asal. Pashtuns have the concept of Sattr which is same is Pardah where people are expected to behave a certain way and respect certain rules. Actually even Persians or all Iranic tribes even before Islam had concept of pardah where the females were expected to cover up certain body parts. Pants were invented by Iranian tribes for a reason :P

Most of the elite was Pashtun, so the chance is big that the majority is PAshtun in those pics, Shapur is fake pashtun becuase he has never set foot in Afghanistan and is probably some indian convert, aka punjbaboon.
Back in those day main cities had diffrent cultures from the rural areas, but like in evey country the capital is always more liberal, and this type women saw themself as being modern, they did not think like ow this is western clothing its not really Afghan culture so I should not wear it, they were thinking I am modern and I want modern look so for them this was the modern look....People did not make think that complex as now, when now its is seen bad and provocative to wear even sunglasses in public....They say its as mimiking western culture -_-

In the large cities, Pashtuns were pretty modernised. In the countryside (even rural Tajiks, rural life all over Afghanistan no matter what ethnicity is essentially the same) however, it is a completely different story.

Because that's exactly what it is; these styles of dress are products of Western cultural habitys, people equated Western with Modenr. This fallacy should be refuted every time it appears.

House slaves like you will fail at presenting western norms as the standard for modernization at every turn.

Also, as economist Kaushik Basu says: "For a nation to progress it is important for people to spend time on science, mathematics and literature instead of spending time showing that 5,000 years ago their ancestors did science, mathematics and literature."

First off Forreigner is a troll; who calls Pashtuns "Pathans" please make note of this everyone and take everything he writes with 20 grains of salt.

Secondly, please stop referring to this as modern, The proper term is Mentally Colonized.

Third, sure there were some positives of this era, there was relative security compared to now. but women having no respect for themselves and showing their legs is not development or progress.

Fourth, The problem is with Afgnans we turn to extremes, we need to follow a balanced Path. as Islam teaches.

u have some great points brother. As a guy with honorable code of life, I don't like that the women are showing legs. For me it shows cheapness, but I believe Khostai was right that people wanted to feel modern. they enjoyed the peaceful time Afghanistan had.

Although miniskirts show cheap and immoral behavior and also is not a sign of progress, I believe women shouldn't cover their faces. Men should be the ones who must stop being sick perverts and stop undressing a woman with their eyes. When I posted pics I didn't mean to say miniskirt = progress. most pics people are dressing very modestly though. What I meant was the atmosphere and how happy people look, also how clean and organized the place looks.

Sure , my point is people shouldn't turn to extremes. to be good Muslims we don't need to be Taliban or copy Saudi Arabia, to be Modern, we don't need to be the Kardashians and copy the Netherlands.

In evolutionary biology the concept of "pardah" is called mate guarding.

You say this after promoting the manufactured Western narrative that their social norms should be the standard for what's modern.

Soraya T was pretty avant gard. She dressed like a flapper - think bob haircut, a conche (hat), skirt, like raucous twenties.

But that is the only pashtana trawled on the net from that time.
