I have been to Hazara, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Battagram, etc. There may be language variation with many people speaking Hindko and many people Pashto as well but there is a lot of cultural similarity with Pashtuns even if the language is not Pashto. I saw women covering themselves with "paronai"(chaddur) as in our areas and people having almost the same looks and dress as in the north-west. Even the languages in some area have been influenced mutually.
I will link Hazara in particular and Potohar in general with the cultures of the groups in the north-west whether Dardic of Gilgit, Chitral, Kohistan, Kashmir or Iranic (Pashtuns ) of Peshawar Valley and beyond.
I believe most of the Hindko speaking people are Dardic people in reality descendants of early Indo-Aryans (proto-Indo-Aryan) that also got mixed with Pashtuns e.g. Swatis, Shilmanis, Tarins, Jadoons, Dalazaks, etc.
