Why do people marry their cousins in the south asian sub Cont.

Its a cultural thing yes but why aren't there any awareness programs in regards to the possible medical defects that the kids can have as a result of these kinds of marriages.

And i would like to now how many of you feel ok with it ?

People don't like to give their children to strangers, they don't wanna 'lose' them. Plus if it's in their own family, then thay can watch over them and still have them close.

I don't have anything against cousin marriages, if both parties are happy then so be it. Although, I don't think you should continuously marry into the family, it's just not healthy. In Britain a Baroness has set up a charity to fight cousin marriages amongst Asians, namely Pakistani's, because of the birth defects it's having on children.

I personally would prefer not to marry a cousin and so have no intention of doing so.

There are many heated debates across the globe on whether first cousin marriages causes birth defects. I am not too sure about it because in some articles i have read that it is close to the same percentage as marrying a stranger, but then i have also read that those countries have high birth defects, so i do not really know. But it is true that if there is a certain gene with disabilities, etc that it increases the chances the offspring will have some sort of it if the parents are cousins.

Many people in countries that practice this, like Afghanistan, are not much aware of their genes or family history.

So if you do marry your cousin, check your family history first. (Jeez i already sound like a doctor :P)

I have never, ever met or heard of a married couple (cousins) that have a defected child.

The reason why cultures do it, and have been doing it since the beginning of mankind is because its a very reasonable choice, brings the family ties closer and stronger, and it is simply not easy to give away your child to another family. Also there are other reasons too.

In my family, we do not marry first cousins because most of the time we are raised in one household or have been breastfeed from the same woman, etc.

I have nothing against cousin marriages, but i just dont want it. And my parents already accepted that from me.

Well usually cousins in the West do not marry one another, usually you marry a cousin back home. One you havent really known.
