  • Taliban bans tight men's clothing in Waziristan

The Pakistani Taliban have banned tight or see-through clothing for men, threatening to impose a fine and shutter businesses selling the items, traders from the country's restive tribal belt said Saturday.

Shopkeepers in Wana, the main town of South Waziristan tribal district along the Afghan border told AFP the written warning came ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan which began on Thursday in Pakistan.

"All such clothes which are of a thin material and which do not properly cover men's bodies are un-Islamic and against Pashtun culture," said the pamphlet, distributed in Wana bazaar.

It warned that any shopkeeper found selling such items will be charged a fine of 5000 rupees ($50) and will also see his shop closed for at least five days.

The pamphlet also warned male residents "not to wear such clothes".

A government official in Wana confirmed the written warning and told AFP that the local militant groups had previously banned the sale of tight or see-through clothes for women.

South Waziristan is one of seven districts that make up Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). The semi-autonomous region of mountains, valleys and caves is one of the most deprived and ill-educated in the country.

Taliban militants in Pakistan have often targeted shops selling music and films that they say break Islamic moral codes.

it's probably very very personal. if they had a reason other than it being that, they would have probably focused on closing the pashto "film" industry instead. children can't go to school with out getting shot in the head but women are dancing naked out doors in almost every musik video produced there.

If it means less men wearing skinny jeans then I fully support this initiative.

Have you even been in Afghanistan/Pakistan? Skinny jeans have reached far.

Its funny to see a pashtun forum so oblivious to the pashtun lands!

By the way, my father is far from being a wahabi, my grandfather is a deobandi who literally calls wahabis deviants and they both (along with my other family members) absolutely hate skinny jeans and pants and general and call it haram on several counts some of them which may hold weight. So really its not a "wahabi" thing at all.

Waziristan isn't even known to have a lot of salafis anyway.

I hate skiny jeans too, but I am not gona ban them, just becuase some western born PAshtuns came to visit his dads village, I don't go to Pakistan, but judging that those areas are no difrent from Afghan PAshtun areas, I can say one thing no Pashtun men wears skiny jeans in rural aresa, if they do post some pictures, if it is so widespread?
Even in the big citys Pashtun men don't wear those jeans, this is another proof that taliban have just lost there mind making stupid laws instead of concentrating on the real problems, what is gona be next are they gona ban red nail polish becuase its too sexy and makes men loose there minds????

i would ban them. for men and women. along with guys getting their eyebrows threaded, spiky hair and those gay ass scarves around their necks. toss some pakols at them or something.. actually, not even the pakols..toss some khuwali at them. offenders will have to clean roadsides until they have blisters on their hands.

i just came from Afghanistan less than a week ago and i can testify i've seen boys wear tight jeans (not skinny but fall under the same thing for the people there), skinny jeans is a kabul thing though i've seen it in Peshawar too.

The reason why some deem it to be haram is because they see it as manipulating the kuffar, those who are in essence lower than you and the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him said whoever imitates, or looks similar to a people is from them.

edit: I'm not actually suggesting that the taliban have banned it, i wouldn't know at all and i don't really believe what this news report says.

I actually approve of this. Tight clothes questions one sexuality and is disgusting when men wear it. Now hopefully the Taliban can ban this practice in Afghanistan with all the hipsters along with skating, then I will be set for life.

I doubt the Taliban can do that in Kabul, they'll probably seek for a gradual banning of these clothes. Taliban have bigger fish to fry in Afghanistan like Shirk murder and corruption.
