  • Share unusual Pashtun customs here

While I was looking at art depicting Afghans/Pashtuns by non-Pashtuns I came across this. Please look at the sketch and then read the description of what I found to be a very unusual custom.

Ghiljie women in the lower orders

This lithograph is taken from plate 6 of 'Afghaunistan' by Lieutenant James Rattray. This sketch was made on one of Rattray's journeys from Kabul to Kandahar with an Afghan escort. Rattray was uncomfortably aware that his companions could easily and quietly dispose of him, given the length of the journey and the remoteness of some of the places they passed through.
Rattray's group often came across roving bands of western Ghilzais, who lived a nomadic life from season to season, searching for pasture for their flocks. Their black felt tents stretched over twigs resembled a "flock of enormous bats skimming over the flat surface of the plain". Their women drove their camels, bullocks and donkeys, "laden sky-high with the most singular mix of goods and chattels". "The unmarried Ghilzai women bore a peculiar badge of virginity on their foreheads: "[bringing] the whole of their hair to the front of their face, and kneading it into a compact cake with an admixture of dung and mud, ornament it with beads, bits of metal and coloured glass." Some of them were very pretty, Rattray observed, but others were squint-eyed from peering around the sides of their "odious distinction". http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/onlin...u00006000.html

Please if anyone knows anything about this (former I hope lol) custom let us know Also if you can think of any very unusual customs of your tribe (past or present ones) please share them here

the first impression of the picture is more arabic that pashtun but then what do i know?

never heard of a tradition like this, and knowing pashtuns , they wont give people hints about their virginity.
We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.

If I agree with you we w'd both be wrong.

loooool blood on a white sheet after wedding night reffers 2 the tear of the hymen on penetration on 1st time.... it shows the virginity of the girl... besides hymen can tear by itself so not a good test 4 virginity!

In women there is a memberane called the hymen... it tears usually when a woman has sex for the 1st time leaving blood on the sheets.... shows she never had sex before
howevere this membrane can tear by itself so presence or rather abcense of blood doesnt mean she isnt a virgin
