  • Handicrafts of Islampur, Swat

Islampur, a small village in Swat, is known for its fine-quality handmade woollen shawls. The woolen products are famous not only in khyber pukhtunkwa but in the whole country for its best quality. Usually in exhibitions, different designs and variety of these shawls are on the display.

Pashtuns are coming out of the false paranoia that skilled work is beyond their dignity and to be done only by low caste residents of the area called Jolagan(weavers). These Jolagan are still considered the lowest and meanest in the social stratification especially in Swat but today we see that Pashtuns are proud of their work.

Pashtuns treat the same way with all artisans and artists and that's why Pashtunland is the ideal world for Wahabi puritans and obscurantists. Wahabis are against all fine arts and the same way Pashtuns discourage any art or craft creative work.

I will call it a big day if a Pashtun will get marry with a Jola or the other way round!

During my tours of Swat I have been to Islampur and have seen with my own eyes the great work going on there. Islamapur is similar to Marghuzar in its picturesque beauty.

There was another village I remember Jolaabad near a ceramics factory near Kabal but I have heard this village has been disappeared at least its weaving industry because the Pashtuns were making fun of the Jolagan. I do not know a friend from Swat can confirm it?

Badlun you use your brain in an extreme way when you find some one or something against your ideology. We never looked down upon them we respect their art and anyone doing in his proffession. For example ingaraan, paraachkaan, deqanaan, jolagaan and so many other professions that people are related to are given respect and price of their hard work. What you are saying is a different thing that has nothing to do with wahabism or any islam although wahabism discourage such norms. That is actually our pashtun culture but i think that is not the biggest issue. Our real issues are others about which people dont want to talk.

The problem is THEY and WE. Jolagan are they and other Pashtuns consider them another class. Never a Pashtun would like to become a Jola or marry a daughter of a Jola or giver his daughter's hand to the son of a Jola.

The same is with other artisans and artists like dancers(daman), singers(sandar gharhi)potters(kulalalan), barbers(nayan),animal trasporters(parachkan), cobblers(chamyaran) etc.

Keeping the above in view I said that Wahabis have found the fertile land of Pashtuns for their ideology as both are against art and craft.
