it's a natural dye that doesn't contain chemicals and is not as expensive as chemical dyes may come for in rural areas of afghanistan. it's also said to be a good conditioner for your hair.
"To burn always with this hard gemlike flame, to maintain this ecstasy, is success in life."
In short, it is tradition prescribed by our Prophet (saw). He recommended old men not leave their beards gray, but dye them with a plant such as henna. So people do it for the reward.
"Do not waste water even if you were at a running stream."-Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

Really? is it recommended or permissible in hadeeth? Should i get the nakrizi scrubbed on the speen jire? I dont want to be called Ginger.
Dyeing the hair with Henna is a confirmed Sunnah of the Prophet ; he did it, said it and confirmed it. 'Uthamaan Ibn Mawhib said:
"I entered to the house of Um Salamah, so she showed me some hair of the Prophet dyed with Henna and Katam (a kind of dark Henna)." [Ahmad and Ibn Maajah] Furthermore, the Prophet said: "The best thing with which you dye your grey hair is Henna and Katam." [An-Nasaa'ee] Moreover, Ibn 'Abbaas narrated: "A man who dyed his hair with Henna passed by the Prophet . Upon seeing him, the Prophet said: "This man did really well."[Abu Daawood] Besides, Imaam Muslim reported that Abu Bakr and 'Umar dyed their hair with Henna. Therefore, there is no way in doubting over the permissibility of dyeing the hair with Henna or doubting whether or not this is a Sunnah. The fact that Henna does not grow in the desert and believing that the Prophet was unlikely to obtain it, does not affect the religious ruling. Even if we suppose that Henna does not grow in the desert, it is still possible to obtain it through the caravans which travel to Ancient Syria and other countries. It is well-known that the Arabs in general and the tribe of Quraysh in particular used to travel to Ancient Syria and Yemen in winter and summer times. In short, the Prophet obtained and used Henna whether it grew in the desert or obtained it through the tradesmen.
Also:
It was reported that Abu Hurayrah said: the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The Jews and the Christians do not dye their hair, so be different from them.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3275; Muslim, 2103).
It was reported that Abu Umaamah (may Allaah be pleased him) said: “O Ansaar, dye your hair red and yellow, and be different from the A’aajim (Persians).” (Narrated by Ahmad, 21780. The isnaad of this hadeeth was classed as hasan by al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar in al-Fath, 10/354).
*That being said,I have read that it is not permissible to dye gray hair pitch black, and the reason for that is (I think) because it is a form of deception about one's true age. By the way, you are not old. You just might have some grays so dye them insha'Allah. =)
