  • Engagement/Marriage at a young age, why?

    Salaamuno ruruna/khoryani,

So, I just came back from the motherland, I loved it. I got engaged at the age of 17, and my brother did as well; He's 15 almost 16. And it was not a forced engagement. My fiance is 14, and my brothers fiance is 13. I'm just wondering why do we get engaged at such a young age? I've always been curious about it. I think it's just something that my parents maybe grew up with so maybe they passed it on... What's your take on it brothers/sisters?

my mom got me when she was 17. so idk. i have more time to live with my mom nd plus she get to see her grandchildren.
i think this is a custom tradition in those areas (afghanistan, iran, balochistan).

I think it's good to get engaged early as long as both have a say in it.. Well ppl back then in the old days got married early because the life expectancy was not that long maybe 30 40
So I guess it stuck with most ppl..

It is a early tradition, that the most beautiful women / girls are married early, because either their parents get through this tribal assistance, statue, help or alliance.
And in former times it was also due to war and other cases, the parents feared that after their death no one will be there to marry their children with people equal to their tribes.

Our tribe dislikes to give their girls unto other tribes it is not imaginable to give a girl outside of paktya,it is if she is worthless.

But in the past 10 years it changed....girls and boys equally get their view either they want to be engaged in certain family with certain girl or boy and they have knowledge about their future spouse.

When have you planned to marry ?

That is really not good getting engaged at such a young age---Outdated traditions of medieval ages---

One should not marry until one is fully mature---not before 30 years---There is a lot to see and experience in the world before you get married---Marriage by the way is not such an important matter.

If your goal in life is to reproduce as much as possible before you die then it's a perfect idea. If you have better objectives andin life then it's a stupid idea.

In this day and age, I would say a good age for marriage for males is 27-30 and and 22-26 for females. Life expectancy has increased and most people live upto 60 so its not like old times when people usually died before hitting 45.

There is so much to learn about yourself and the world around you, and marriage can sometimes be a help or a hindrance in that quest depending on the kind of person you are with. Before getting married find out who exactly you are and what you want in life. Once you are a content and happy inside then you are ready to get married. Make sure the person you are getting married to knows exactly what you want in life so there are no confusions later on. Talk to your partner about what you are looking for in a partner and see if you are acceptable to each other. Some people might compromize but others might not. Honesty at the end is the best policy.

Well this is new to me. In afghan culture it's not commen to get engaged at such a young age, mostly Arabs do this. Have your parents ever thought about your future like school and getting a good job? These are things to think about.

I guess you wish to have been married that way, because with so many failed years of trying to convince a girl makes you a suicidalcase.

haha yeah clearly because every woman's dream is to get raped as a teenager by a bearded boy molesting mullah who goes around beating women in the streets.
