A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai
For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."
The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

He wants to say "not refined, conspicuously and tastelessly indecent"
But I think Pashtuns are simple, sincere, not organised individually and collectively. They are independent minded, don't want to be ruled by anyone individually or collectively.

It's a serious question and if we take the example of the masses and how they are portrayed in the Pakistani, Indian and western media then there is a definite stereotype.
There is an educated class who fight this notion of crudeness but until we have much more proactive media we cannot really control this negative image.
I can see why some Pashtuns, and in particular, free thinking educated Pashtun females, are drawn to the 'sophistication' of Persian or Lahori/Indic culture which is more relaxed. Controversial, I guess, but we have to look at our own behaviours.

I mostly agree with that perception but lean more on the side of "less sophisticated more crude". Whether in terms of social organization or the capacity to build institutions or intellectual or economic output or cultural or artistic creativity, our society has not been transformed much. We are still basically a rural people although there are some signs of a Pashtun urban class emerging.
One thing I can't understand is the Pashtun obsession with power---that also brute physical power. Fundamentally, a Pashtun is a power-seeker and an aggressive power-asserter whether in family or in public . As for I have observed Pashtuns pay little regard to "artisan" professions or professions where you exercise soft power. Even in traditional agrarian sense, you don't see many "artisan families" of "pure Pashtun" origin. This tendency also exhibits in modern occupational preference where Pashtuns would generally seek positions of power and authority.Last edited by Toramana; 07-23-2012, 08:08 PM.
