  • Afghan carpets

Salam. I have added a few photos of Afghan carpets (from my recent purchase to some over 10 years old). I really admire Afghan carpets because they are the fabric of my memories and future treasure for my children. However more substantially they reflect the monumental effort that goes into weaving these rugs, and remind me of the austere circumstances of the weavers, the economy of scale and exploitation. I know I am part of their misery as a consumer and stuck in the chain of sellers, however given the opportunity to buy directly from the weavers, I would pay the dollars I have paid the shopkeepers for these carpets. Please look at my 'carpets' album.

I have a small collection of carpets, including Afghan, Iranian, Kashmiri, Turkish and Morrocan ones. The Afghan ones sell for a good price in Karachi and Dubai. Patterns include Kalashnikovs (typical), inscription etc. Persian carpets are very good for patterns, and the Afghan ones really do tell a story. My latest additions include Balochi weaves and Uzbek wall hangings.

Look forwards to the album Torkham .

Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

I am not too crazy about qaleens but I can't imagine what you intend on using the orange and yellow ones with. It's hard to match the rest of your furniture with those colors. But yeah, the first one is pretty.

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

That one came from Peshawar. When the Global Village in Dubai is on around November the Afghanistan and Pakistan pavilion are the places to look. The carpet sellers in the last Pakistan pavilion are mostly from Quetta.

I am not an expert on Afghan rugs and carpets but I think that carpets and rugs are hand knotted, not weaved...

I never seen a carpet being made, seen photos of young kids elderly women with a curved tool for pulling down the fibers.

I lack the ability to coordinate colours. But THAT piece contrasts well with rest of my many red kalins.

There are few techniques of making rugs. Knotted-pile method is typical for Oriental and Kashmiri rugs.
In fact it was the first thing I heard about Afghan and Persian rugs from my professor "In Orient rugs and agreements are knotted."

                          1. To grade the quality of a carpet, one looks at the back and counts the number of knots per a given unit. The more the knots the better/ more expensive is the carpet.

                          2. These days machines roll out carpets. In my country we have been making carpets machine-made with jute. But the real carpet is the Persian handmade carpet. Afghan carpet and some carpets made in parts of Turkey, Pakistan and India would be Persian carpets.
