  • am i pashtun

my name is MirWais and i was born in US. my father was born and raised in kandahar (moved to kabul his senior year of highscool). My mother was born in kabul but her family is from Jalalabad (surkhrod) and Logar (baraki barak).

Now my father's grandfather was an ethnic tajik from Ghazni (this isnt 100% but lets just say most extreme scenario). his wife was alakozai from Kandahar. so my grandpa was then half pashtun half tajik. my grandpas wife (my grandma lol) was 100% pashtun and the daughter of sardar ayub khan (full mohammadzai not those half and half ones). therefore, my dad wud be 75% pashtun 25% tajik (i dont like using percents and stuff but just for the moment).

my moms grandpa from her dads side was from baraki barak and pashtun. my moms grandma from dads side was pashtun from jalalabad. my moms mothers side is from Surkhrod in jalalabad, full pashtun (Jabbarkhel/Arsala), light skinned and green or blue eyes (im the same thing except my eyes r VERY light brown).

Ive always identified with pashtuns and pashtun culture (cuz everyone in my family except my great grandpa was/is pashtun). ive been raised pashtun and practice pashtunwali strictly (even beard, turban, afghan clothes, etc. lol). im in the process of learning pashto from my dad (wen moms family moved to kabul they taught their kids more farsi than pashto).

So finally, i love pashtuns and pashtun culture and identify with it 100% and believe im pashtun. but wud u guys classify me as pashtun

7 out of your 8 great grandparents are Pashtuns and this makes you 87.5% Pashtun, 12.5% Dari.

Another confused individual from west seeking guidance from PFers in determing his identity as if we are authority on issueing certificate of level of pashtuness.
First of all we dont measure ourselves racially in manner like in your USA i.e person A is quarter white, 75% black or person B has german, italian, american and native american ancestory....Simply if your father is pashtun and you are speaking pashto then count yourself a pashtun. No percentage BS.
Second its upon you. A true pashtun should not be confused like you who is not even sure whether he is pashtun....Green blue yellow eyes wont make you a pashtun if you are suffering from such level of identity crisis.

          shukur ubasa

first of all you are born as human , allhamdulillah .

second you are born to afghan parents . allhamdullilah

whether you are pashtun or not is not determinied only by your blood but by your acts .

do you support your familiy , do you have a sence of nang ou namous ?

do you live your culture ? do you speak your language ? do you know your history ? ( and no i dont mean pnline donkey knowledge ,like most of the people here reffer to )

do you use your brain ? unlike others who never lived or have seen a talib but praising them day in day out without using their brains ...

You could be culturally Pashtun, but to be a full Pashtun you have to be born from the womb of a Pashtun woman.

Brother very sorry to say but as for as I think I am strait forward. Because your father's grandfather was not Pashtun so it does not seem that you are pashtun. You love us and our culture I appreciate that.
If you are not pashtun than it does make you inferior. I still respect you.

                    Waleed,

In my opinion, it doesn't matter if you are 90% Japanese. It just depends on you. If you identify yourself as Pashtun, you learned the language and adopt aspects of it's culture, and you are truly concerned about the Pashtuns, their civil rights, irregardless if they are on either side of the Durand, then that makes you Pashtun.

Blood has nothing to do with it. Most Pashtuns are of mixed ancestry anyways since Pashtuns married women from all parts of Afghanistan and outerlying Central Asia/South Asia.
