^ It very likely is their invention. They used to be referred to as Chitrali hats and the best quality came from there. I think after the Soviet war, they became popular with Afghans.

And why no one talks about Pashtun hats from Eastern areas, like Nangarhar?
These hats are usually white, and the ones made in Landi Kotal or Lwargay are very famous among Pashtuns.

Which one are you talking about, the krakuls? The hat hamid karzai wears? Because that is originaly a Turkic hat not pashtun.Originally posted by یاسمینه View PostAnd why no one talks about Pashtun hats from Eastern areas, like Nangarhar?

The original headress of Pashtun people were always turbans because of their warm climate."Revenge is a dish best served cold".

No Kushan, I am not talking about karakuli hat. I think Nangarhar or other Eastern areas are too hot to wear it. I am talking about white cap with flat top, which is made of plain fabirc.
It is also typical Pashtun headwear.دلته دم او قدم دواړه په حساب دي - پل په لاره غلط مه ږده بې حسابه

karakul is tajik not pashtun but some speenrubi pashtana also use it.
Patkay, shamla or lungy is part of pashtun culture.
Now,the pakol is more papular nowdays.
Elders in our area use it more then youngs.
pakol is also now part of pashtun culture even the non pashtun wear it too.
the origin of pakol is from the Dardic and kohistani people.
The chetrali make the best pakol which is famouse all over pakhtunkhwa from chetral to bolan. In afghanistan the Dardic people such as nuristanis, pashais and also kohistanis make soft and nice pakol.
It is for wenter not summer.

The origin of the pakol is actually questionable. The chitralis claim on the hat sounds pretty suspicious to me. Back then during the second Anglo-Afghan pashtuns were wearing pakols so it's defiantly not recent.Originally posted by gadoonwal View Postkarakul is tajik not pashtun but some speenrubi pashtana also use it.

you right,it is not recent but it is part of chetrali dress.chetral was state ruled by chetrali ruler for such a long period of time.In their history book and art pakol is their own.Originally posted by Kushan Prince View PostThe origin of the pakol is actually questionable. But like i said it is from the north and mostly dardic people make it but pashtun also use it.
People from gilget, baltistan also make very nice and soft pakol like chetralis and punjsheris do..

Pashtuns were originally turban wearers. The Kandahari cap was used and still is used to tie a turban around. Considering the hot pashtun areas, it would have been impossible to survive without a huge turban on your head from sun exposure and thus the Lungee was created. Some beliefs are that the lungee either originated from Kandahar or modern day Balkh city which was originally Pashtun inhabited. Different tribes wear different Lungee colors to identify which tribe they belong to. For example the Durrani wears grey silky turbans as opposed to the Ghilzai's who wear black stripped turbans and the Wazir's who wear big golden lungee's.
I will leave it that."Revenge is a dish best served cold".

I also wear it for prayers but it has become more than that. In my area talibs (religous students) wear it all the time but in peshawer valley it has become a custom to wear this hat all the time...unlike pakol you can also wear it in summer.... Geography also determines your dress and headwear. My region is desert, very hot and sunny with frequent sand storms...so marwat people carry a chadar on their one shoulder...can make patkay out of it...can spread it on ground and sit on it and use it to cover your face during sand storm... it has become character and tradition of marwat people to carry chadar on shoulder whether he is khan or mazdoor. Our neighbour wazirs and mehsuds wear waziri cap, pakol with upper part spread out...their region is mountainous and cold..,it is so strongely deep rooted that wazirs wear it even in hot places like lakki marwat and DI khan...Originally posted by Kushan Prince View PostThose aren't pashtun hats, those are Muslim hats.
