i saw a middle aged asian guy wearing a pakol at a gas station in san francisco the other day, weird.

On zarinas.com thet write the following about this hat:
This hat is used for wrapping a turban. This special hat is locally called Kola (colah).

The underlined words do not apply to this particular hat only. Their meanings are cap or hat. They are presnt both in Pashto and Dari.

But i think I have seen this type of hat only from Pashtuns, and i think mostly from those of Pakistan.

Yes, I can read I just wanted you to know what the meaning of the word was.

Pashtun districts of KPK south of kohat tunnel do not wear pakol at all, the region is dry, hot and sunny. Wazirs and mehsuds though are in south but their regions are cold and they wear pakol , of their own style , as well as lungi...

Well i prefer the Lungee because its is the turban of the pashtuns and a pashtun invention while the pakol didn't become popular with the afghans until the 20th century when they were fighting the Russians. I like both though.

Kandahari cap has a distinctive notch in front. It is usually embroidered and and richly decorated.

I heard that the pakol is actually a descendant of the Macedonian Kausia which was used for lion hunting. Another theory is that it originated in either nooristan or paktia province. Chitralis claim it is their invention although that claim sounds like BS.
