  • Can Pashtuns understand Arabic?

I was wondering if pathans can understand Arabic?
I can speak some Arabic and was wondering if it would be of any use to me if if visited Pasthunistan?
I can speak some Russian as well, if that would help me in Afghanistan?
I would like to visit Afghanistan after you're war ends.

How do all the Arab fighters manage to communicate in Afghanistan then?

Pashtuns for the most part can read Arabic, but they can't speak it. There is usually one Pashtun out of the bunch, who can speak Arabic, and he serves as the translator.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

From pure lingusitic point of view - Arabic and Pashto have some lexical similarities, ie. some Arabic words are common in Pashto. If it comes to grammar - some Pashto nouns of Arabic origin can be inflected according to Arabic grammar or Pashto grammar rules, ex. fekr (singular) - afkaar (Arabic plural) or fekruna - Pashto plural form.

There are also Arabic prefixes etc but to be honest, i don't thin that average user of Pashto language could understand Arabic.

no we are no arabs , so we dont speak no arabic ...

how ever we use the arabic alphabet adjusted to write , as you use the roman latin alphabet .

there several words taken and adopted , but if it comes to grammer you will fail .

as you could actually read any language which is written in latin roman letters , so we can read any language in arabic letters , but we would not understand it nor could we proper pronounce it .

take for example spanish or even vietnamese , i gues you could read the letters but it would make no sence to you ???

That is true. We are Pashtuns not Arabs. Most Pashtuns (almost 99.9%) don't understand Arabic although they are forced to read Quran written in Perso-Arabic script. But that is without knowing its meanings.

I don't understand how some westerners tend to think everyone living from South Asia to Somalia is an Arabic speaker... or somehow knows how to communicate in it. Arabic is actually spoken only by the arabs though some rare Pashtuns have the ability.

If you are going to join the Taliban or Hakeemullah Mahsud though, good luck... most of that idiot's fighters are Arabs and Uzbeks. :D

How? Normally. In majority, we Westerners are a bit narrow minded and Western culture is our main reference point to everything. For average Westerner there is no difference between Arab and Pers, Pashtun = talib, etc. Sense of superiority (stupidity) and lack of curiosity about the unknown makes that we stuck in stereotypical thinking. Of course not everyone is like that.

All of us lack the knowledge in various fields due to different reasons. For some it is pure ignorance, for others - lack of experience, certain circumstances and opportunities. No one is perfect. I would like to give you one example. Have you heard that in some areas of Afghanistan, Pakistan or India every "horeji" is called angrez?

what do you think of John Walker Lindh ?

He is in Jail for fighting the Northern Alliance , he never killed or injured an American citizen, yet is in Jail for getting involved in your civil war and is in Jail for 20 years.

We get spoon fed this bull**** in the Western Media that the Karzai government/Northern Alliance were somehow altruistic Jeffersonian democrats fighting for freedom an the Taliban are evil number one. My opinion is not to get involved in other peoples wars.

PS when the Americans leave how long do yu think it will take the Taliban to win?
