  • Folklore / Mythology

I've been looking everywhere for sources on pashtun folklore or mythology. I can find quite a few stories of folklore here, but does anyone know of a book or internet source I can use? I know it's difficult to find given pashto is more of a spoken language and not a lot is written down.

If not a source, perhaps you can tell me some common pashto folklore stories. I'm working on a project for a class.

Since you're from surobi, do you know the complete story of shireene and momin khan? I asked around many ppl in afghanistan but every person gives me a different story.

not really. i once read a novel about it in pashtu when i was very young. maybe 13 or so but i don't remember a thing. i have seen their "qalaa" though. it's right before you reach surobi to the left hand, coming from kabul. i will check my parent's library to see if they have anything on it.

Patha Khazana is a good source of Pashun mythology. I think you can find English version in our Kitabtoon, in English books section. For sure it's available somewhere in internet. Just google it.
Another source - there is a book (I haven't seen it in e-version) "Pashtun Tales". I bought it from Amazon.

I looked at Pashtun Tales, but the reviews I read about it said they weren't very accurate or necessarily Pashtun. Is that true?

I think only Pashtuns could tell you if the tales coming from Pashtun tradition. Anyway, I tihnk you could rely on this source because it's one of very few English materials. Plus, you as a reader can't decide if its true or not, unless you have some proofs.
I don't know what kind of project you work on, but you can always present the stories from the book saying that some claim that stories are not Pashtun or so.
You can also mention something about autrors of the book, read preface etc...

i read half of it, put it down and never picked it up again
all the stories start to sound the same, or maybe it just seemed like that because i read a whole bunch in a row

                          And they say
She's in the Class A Team
                          Stuck in her daydream
                          Been this way since 18
                          But lately her face seems
                          Slowly sinking, wasting
                          Crumbling like pastrie

Milli Hindara/ملی هنداره is a good source of classic Pashtun folklore. The author is Mohammed Gul Noori and it was written decades ago. I started reading it when i was 9, it helped me with my Pashto reading a lot. You can buy it online or from any Afghan/Pashtun book stall at VA, NY and California. I will see if i can find you PDF copy.
