I think this guy is from Chitral or some where around those areas way up north, he basically looks white, maybe eastern european. how common is this look among pashtuns?
i recognize afghans from like 10 meters away (OK not really 10 meters) but afghans have a distinct look that is really easily recognizable by afghans...
as far as the first pic... very common in some areas in afghanistan. not just necessarily pashtuns.
The main distractor from his overall appearance seems to be the blond red hair. I'm sure if this same man had dark hair, traditional clothing and a lungee no one would think twice about him in a crowd in Kandahar or somewhere. I've been told red hair is a gene mutation or defect, I don't know. But I've witnessed people with this look in various areas around Helmand, Kandahar, Zabul (saw more people with red and light hair in northern Kandahar near Zabul than anywhere else) and also saw more than a few around Wana in southern Waziristan. I haven't been all over Afghanistan but the places I'm familiar with, there are people like this. As Gulbabo said it's very common in some areas of Aghanistan, I've seen it in Waziristan and this man is apparently Chitrali so the gene must somehow be spread everywhere with Pashtuns and maybe others too (I've witnessed near blonde Hazaras).
This look can be seen mostly from Mountain areas or what one would refer to as mountain tribes since the hill mans have always avoided being influenced by invaders than those from the plains.

A pashtun does not look like this person. 1-Pashtuns are genetically light skinned, but the guy in the picture is too much red due to increased RBC count which exist in people living at very high altitude in response to low oxygen tension...this guy is close to albino, pashtuns have beautiful skin tone whey they are fair. Even on plain areas you would find fair-skinned pashtuns which means it is genetical trait, not an outcome of mountain' enviroment.
2- Pashtuns have distinct facial features on the basis of which you can immediately recognize them, the guy in picture has non-pashtun features.
3- Brown hairs are very common among pashtuns. A "typical" pashtun is known for green eyes and brown hairs. But these are recessive hairs. My grandfather had green eyes and brown hair. My father has inherited only brown hairs , his eyes are brown. And I have black hairs and brown eyes...among four sons of my grandfather, only one inherited green eyes. And children of my this uncle (my first cousins) have green eyes...the wife of my another uncle (who himself is brown eyed) has hazel eyes, only one of their children has hazel eyes...one things is for sure green eyes/brown hairs trait is gradually decreasing.
now that u made a thread about afghan looks, i have noticed a fairly consistent pattern with pure afghans. most tend to look like this:
i see similiarities between these faces.
Tajiks mostly look like first and 3rd picture (I know the first guy is pashtun but many pashtuns of afghanistan are half-tajiks or have tajik genes in them from grandparents).
Pashtuns of Afghanistan mostly look like 2nd picture.

there is a "pashtun" look and there is a "tajik" look but alot of times it is very indistinguishable.
due to inter mixing? possibly. but dont forget, we are the closest to tajiks physically. both iranic people.
I have seen a similar blond looking guy in Kabul with green eyes speaking Pashto. I am not sure if he was Pashtun or not but he did not sound like a Tajik speaking Pashto.
I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.
non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.
