When it comes to Attan, Paktia takes the crown, hands down. I believe from the age of 7, alongside prayer, they are taught how to perform the Attan. It's not optional, you must know how to do the Attan. That's according to one of my old Paktiawal friends. I personally like the Wardak and Wazirwal attan.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Isn't Attan haram? I thought dance was forbidden in Islam?

Depends on one's intent when performing Attan or any other dance. Generally accepted thought based on compiled ahadith and Quranic references is that dancing is only haram in mixed gender company. You should ask a local Mullah or Imam or research on the internet for more details on why, etc. as well as references in scripture. I have encountered many contrasting views on this subject though. The above though, is what I personally accept; the genders should be seperated for these activities. But there are schools of thought that prohibit it in all circumstances and that's a different story and not really related to this thread.
