Calligraphy is considered a legitimate form of art and script in Islamic societies, and whilst I've seen examples of Arabic, Urdu, Farsi and Turkish calligraphy, I've not come across well publicised examples of calligraphy and calligraphic forms in Pashto.

Well, let's start a Pashto caligraphy competition on Pashtun forums. I got a caligraphy equipment but I can't really write anything beautiful. But sure would love to try to show what I already know.
Maybe we can all participate and improve our skills.[SIZE="4"][B][CENTER][URL="www.quranawsunnat.com"]www.quranawsunnat.com

Serendipity Sangar !! I was thinking something along these lines ... even today, I wrote something for the Dars wall, then put it to one side. I think I'll go back and complete now ...Originally posted by Sangar View PostWell, let's start a Pashto caligraphy competition on Pashtun forums. ... because there are so many new threads in the Pashto language section, I feel the hunger to learn is being met, but ... by way of trying to get members to write in Pashto I had this idea, however, using some Web 2.0 (Wordle) type application where I could collect lots of names from the forum and create a name wall.
The condition would be for users to submit their name in Pashto only (user-names, and of course with a name like Tor Khan, you don't need any unique Pashto characters, Arabic will do fine).
I'll do a little write up on the Dars wall, InshAllah.

The first time I picked up a pen for Pakhto/Dari writing was about four years ago and I haven't done much since then. I can share one of the very first things I wrote. Some are not considered calligraphy, but it's artwork in another language, so I guess it all counts. The drawback is that I haven't scanned these, so the quality is not all that. Once again, it was the first thing I wrote, so it is not very neat as calligraphy is supposed to be. Also, the art of using a calligraphy pen is a hard one. I have written a few things recently, that I will be reproducing for others, colouring them with water colours and then framing them, as requested. When they're done, I am happy to share them.Originally posted by Sangar View Postpost it
Now, I just have to dig about five backup CDs to see which one has the photos I am looking for ...

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai
For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."
The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!
