Your right, I meant that she is part Tajik from her dad and both grandfathers, but her moms mom is Popalzai. Idk shes kinda mixed herself. But I guess shes Tajik because her dad was. and she speaks Pashto not Dari.Originally posted by Shayesta View Post
Aren't those people with 'Zai' attached to their names actually Pukhtoons? Maybe your mother is a Dari speaking Pukhtana?

Thank you. Thats where im confused, I never said she has a Pashtun last name, she doesnt. Her maden last name is Dost.Originally posted by Jasmine(I am so nosey)
Ghilzai, welcome here.
What she is trying to say is, If your Mom's dad was Tajik. How did she have a Pashtuns lastname? In our patri-archal society, We use our fathers last name not our moms.

^ That's last name of my friend as well and she is a Pukhtana. But you know what, in areas where both Pukhtoons and Tajiks lived for decades, people got so mixed that they don't even know what ethnic they belong to and nor care. That's why I was very surprised to find out Mangal (a singer known as Pukhtoon) is actually a Tajik. As long as we can live with peace and unity together, I happy with either ethnic and either language of ours.Gar Jahanum Sakhtam Ferdaws Ham Mesazamat

Actually they are not considered Tajiks nor Pakhtuns, since their originality is not even Afghan. I dont consider my mothers family Tajiks because of the fact that though they are Dari speaking, they are not from Tajikistan or Iran.Originally posted by Shayesta View Post
Yup yup! But you know, I am actually still confused? Because as far as I know my grandma (and therefore your grandpa) are Tajiks who speak Pukhto, but apparently they are Dari speaking Pukhtoons?
LOL yeah i understand what you mean, its confusing to me too.Last edited by Laila; 04-27-2011, 01:04 AM.

U R RIGHTOriginally posted by Laila View PostActually they are not considered Tajiks nor Pakhtuns, since their originality is not even Afghan. I dont consider my mothers family Tajiks because of the fact that though they are Dari speaking, they are not from Tajikistan or Iran. I have never heard my dad refer to my mom's family as Tajiks, they are simply Sayyids (Arab descent). They are not affiliated with a Pakhtun tribe. I mean our grandfathers were Dari speaking, but have always been patriotic towards Pakhtuns. But my moms immediate family (mother, father, brothers) are Dari speakers. I mean the Kunari Sayyids consider themselves Pakhtuns, i dont see why our family are not considered it. Get what i mean

they dont really care back home but afghans outside have nothing else to do they become racist :D

There are two different kinds of Sayyids. The first kind are Sayyids who are blood related to the tribe and offspring of the prohet muhammad saww. They have a status of nobility in Afghanistan because of their lineage.
These sayyids are not pashtun or tajik. But they have empraced Pashtun idenity because of the society they live in. Some of these sayyids also live in non-Pashtun areas.
The second kind of Sayyids are actually people who claim to be sayyids to obtain a status and to be considered as nobility. They are everywhere in Afghanistan. There is even a man I know who's son was born in Jiddah or Riyadh. And he claims that his son is Sayyid because he was born in "arabistan".
This second type of Sayyids are thus, the fake sayyids. Some prominent fake Sayyids in Afghanistan are among the northern Alliance and the Setamis.[SIZE="4"][B][CENTER][URL="www.quranawsunnat.com"]www.quranawsunnat.com

Thank you for the clear up. My mothers family are actually Sayyids. They came from the Quraish tribe.Originally posted by Sangar View PostThere are two different kinds of Sayyids. Yes you are right, there are many people that claim to be, there are many in Pakistan (Punjabi) that have just added Sayyid, Said, Sadaat to their name just for respect. However, you dont get respect from a name, you rightfully earn it. And its false name. Please no offense to anyone.
I am glad that my mothers family do not act like they need to be respected because of who they are. My grandfathers and great uncles have earned their respect in Eastern Afghanistan (Laghman, Kunar,Ningarhar).
Though because they are Arab descent, my mother's family, Shayesta's, and Sheenkays family have adapted into Pakhtun communities. Hence why Kunar and Laghman are heavily populated with Sayyids.
