  • Pashtun name or not?

    This is my first post here, I will introduction post soon... I was wondering what people here think about the name Khushdil. Many Pashtuns have this name but are it's origins actually Pashtun? Anyone who knows Dari can see the name's meaning but of course Dari is not Pashto. This name is also used by Urdu and Hindi speakers. I have been contemplating this a lot recently as I've met more than a few Pashtuns named Khushdil. So is it Pashtun or not? What do people here think and why?

    *PS - Just saw it listed on Khyber Organization website as Pashtun name http://www.khyber.org/culture/names/boynames.shtml#k

        Welcome Nurzai

        Khushdil could be used in both Pashto and Dari i guess. 'Dil' means heart in Farsi, while Pashto has its own word for 'heart.' You will come upon many non-Pashtuns with Pashto names, especially females, like Malalai, Zarlasht, Wagma.
        I have honestly never heard the name Khushdil as a first name. I have heard of it when a person wants to use it for their families to call them by.

              There should be no short form of mashallah. Try to use full name.
              Thanks

                    I understand the sentiment. Just curious because I know it's a common Iranian surname (Khoshdel) and some Urdu speakers use it. But I know of 2 Pashtuns in Zabul area and 3 in Paktika with the first name Khushdil and as someone noted, "dil" is not Pashto for heart. Again, just curious, I know it's just a name, doesn't really matter...

                      Pashtuns have that name, but that name is not derived from Pashto. I know plenty of Pashtuns with that name. Pashtun names are more like Zmaryalai, Nangyalai, Toryalai, Spozhmey, Pashtun(Yes, that's a common first name in Kandahar), Lalai, Shalalai,etc.

                      //Having a Pashtun name is not a pre/co/requisite for being a Pashtun.

                      A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

                      For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

                      The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!
