The sweet language of Pashto has returned to Herat. Now I can proudly say to everyone that Herat City is the birthplace of Ahmad Shah Baba and the burial place of Kakar and that more than fifty percent of the population of Herat City is Pashtun.

I want to tell all my friends who would laugh if someone mentioned anything about Pashto being spoken in Herat province that they were right, it was indeed an unheard of occurrence but not anymore. Even I used to say that we Herati Pashtuns are unfortunate people. Unfortunate because we lost our ancestral language of Pashto. In the whole city of Herat there was not even a single Pashto newspaper or magazine to be found anywhere. Herat, called the city of literature, the city of knowledge, and the city of culture completely turned it’s back to Pashto language and literature .

Herat City is the capital of Herat province in Afghanistan, and even though Pashto is an official language of Afghanistan, there was not even a single Pashto article in our government magazine and never more than a short news program on our government TV channel. There were many other television channels and many other magazines, but even though the majority of the people of Herat are Pashtuns, none of those were in Pashto either. Any sort of Pashto learning center existed only in our imagination. Pashto seemed almost to be a forbidden language in my city, the so called City of Knowledge.

I will never forget what happened one afternoon when I was at a memorial conference for a Dari poet. At one point in the program, a young Pashtun man came onto the stage and recited a lovely poem in Pashto, praising the life of the respected Dari poet. An Irani diplomat, who was present in the conference shamefully and loudly said; “This is a conference for a Farsi poet and this is Herat so why is he talking in Pashto!”

Today with great happiness and joy, I want to tell everyone that most of Herat’s Pashtuns now speak the sweet language of Pashto. Every weekend, all over Herat province, we have Pashto poetry gatherings and every month we have a large and productive gathering to discuss Pashto and Pashtunwali. Once every year the city of Herat hosts an International Pashto Conference. Now we have Pashto TV channels, Pashto magazines, and Pashto medium schools all over Herat, and more than fifty percent of government TV programs and government magazines are in my beloved language of Pashto.

All this is a reality. I am not dreaming. I am not dreaming. Just as I say this sentence to myself a third time ….., I wake up. Alone in my room, my happiness suddenly turns to great sorrow. It was all a dream. All of beloved Pashto’s miseries still exist in Herat. Pashto is still not welcome in my city and most of it’s Pashtun residents still do not know how to speak their own language. There is no Pashto TV, no Pashto poetry gatherings, no Pashto language conferences, not even a regional one and schools in Pashto medium do not exist.

Recently some Pashtuns in Herat have started a Pashto language magazine called Harrirod named for a river that flows through the province. It the first and so far the only Pashto language publication in Herat. I know I am not alone in these dreams that Pashto language media and learning resources will be available to all Pashtuns everywhere, and I have faith that someday, InshaAllah, this dream of ours will become a reality.

Recently I watched a Shamshad TV broadcast of a Poetry Mushairah from Herat. My paternal ancestors were Herati, so this is great news.

Herat is at least doing something about it.

In Nangarhar we have no pashto schools and I mean we have some but very limited resources to learn pashto.

I don't think this article is telling us the truth. I spent three years working in western Afghanistan and I quit my job because I saw anti-pashtoon atrocities in places like Herat. You might see small pashto-speaking groups in Herat but everything, when I mean everything I mean 99%, is in Dari. The Pashtuns who are in Herat are all Dariwans now and the part that pissed me off was that these Dariwan Pashtuns kicked out Afghan Millat from Herat. The truth is that Herat and many parts of Nimrooz and farah are Iranian colonies today. thousands of Iranians and Iranian businesses are flouding western Afghanistan and Dari speaking Tajiks and Hazaras are very powerful. a small group of pashto-speaking pashtuns demanded a school be named after Ahmad Shah Baba last year but instead of doing this the provincial government built to schools with the help of Iran and named them Roodaki, and Ferduwsi, two dari poets.

How can we have a Renaissance when Pashtuns are being thrown out from their own lands in Western and Northern Afghanistan. Right now they are using the Taliban excuse in places like Balkh, Samangan, Baghlan, Kunduz, and even Herat to remove and displace Pashtuns and to grap their lands for their own Tajiks and Hazaras.

handsomepashtun there is a big population of Pashtuns in Herat but they can't speak Pashto. All of them are Dari speakers today even the ones in Shindand. I don't know if you guys heard or not but Shindand's name might be changed to a Dari word "Sabzawaar" soon. Even the Pashtuns there are supporting this name change.

karachipashtun, currently Atta Noor a Tajik warlord who is the governor of Balkh has removed the majority of the pashtun population from that province. they are labelling all of us in Northern Afghanistan as Nomads and Taliban. Right now these Tajiks and Hazaras are protesting all over Afghanistan to remove Kuchis from Wardak, a province that has always been Pashtun throughout history.

So what happens then? The Pashtuns move to the south?

They can never rule the Pashtuns, never have never will.

Samima it hasn't even been a year since I have returned. That situation is not improving for us, neither in Kabul or Herat. Kabul today is a Punjsheri fort. All strategic locations in Kabul have been occupied by shamaliwals. Evn Pashtun districts like Pul Charkhi, Charasiab, and Paghman are being occupied by them. The same is happening in Herat. Iran is giving Hazaras and Tajiks millions of dollars to buy land from the Pashtuns. Many Pashtun districts in the west of herat are now Hazara districts (the last herati governor was a hazara). Many of Ismail Khan's commanders today own half of Shindand. Almost all of the factories in Herat are either owned by Iranians or their agents. If a Pashtun does not know Dari he is not hired in those factories and companies, this is why many pashto speaking pashtuns left Herat. Last June in Herat when Ahmadinejad won the elections in Iran, half of Herat's Dariwan (Tajik, Hazara, and many Pashtuns) protested for Ahmadinejad and the other half for Mousawi. There are many other examples of this but it makes me cry whenever I remember them.

And about Kabul. Everything there is still in Dari. 90% of the media is in Dari and the language of communication is in Dari. The government has done nothing for our language except a few symbolic things like having the currency in pashto or the national anthem.

The North is being ruled by Ata Noor, a Tajik warlord and Karzai is unable to remove him while Ata bashes and curses Karzai openly in public. I went to Mazar last Nawruz and every there is controlled by Kharasanis.
