yes... exactly... and that angers me so much... seems like people with no family background are now simply adding Khan to their last name.. one even told me that they are decendants from Tajikistan... I smiled and said sure.....

Punjabies etc still call Pakhtuns as "Khan Sahib" that is what all my friends from the Punjab and India call me... even though Khan is not in my name... its like our identity... but again what angers me is that when people name their kids "Khan" what do they expect? They think naming their kid Khan will make them Pakhtun? Don't know but it angers me... Khan is more than a name ... its become and Pakhtun identity... Indian Khans still relate to their Pakhtun identity.... but what about the wannabee Pakhtuns who just slap on a name... that will not make them Pakhtun but that dilutes the respect the Pakhtun identity....

What is all the fuss about guys? The fact that some people respect Pukhtoons enough to use their last name for themselves? Or the fact they can't speak Pukhto and therefore ain't Pukhtoons and therefore shouldn't be a 'Khan'? In that case, count the number of those millions of Pukhtoons who might be Pukhtoons by 'blood' but Farsiwan, Hindkowan, Punjabi, Urduzuban and etcetera by language. Other people are trying to associate with us while we in the past haven't left any opportunity to speak a foreign language as soon as we marry a 'foreigner'. Pukhtoons and their pride/arrogance........

Isn't Khan a Central Asian title that extends beyond the Pashtoon heartlands?

Related Khans stretch across a vast expanse of territory ... China where they are Xan and Japan where they are Han.

Listen, the issue is not on the name of Khan... its the wannabees who want to be called Khan to join the club of Pakhtunwali... no matter how many times they call themselves khan they can never be Pakhtun.... that is why we should keep traditional names and get out of the Arabi names(nothing wrong with it and some may say its a sawab in it). I think we should all name our kids with traditional Pakhtun names and keep ourselves unique....

how does someone else wanting to be a pashtun affect you negatively. is pashtuness a sack of sugar that if random people started using it, there wont be enough left for you?? why are you all acting like a bunch of selfish kids?? grow up and focus on things that actually matter.

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

Lol the name khan is used in alot of countrys even germany it has no real meaning only thing was, khan use to be used by only elite powerful sardar familys now its become so common its used by every tom,so only when you go back home if your from a strong well known uperclass family the people will say khanan's are here for male and females , so it had a meaning before prince now its lost its meaning .

Yes sir.. You are correct. As I am a poor student I often eat there. Many nice people there. Sometime it is my only hot meal of the day. Im sick of cold sandwich. Sometimes they give us a glass of cold cola too.

they may very well by blood be pukhtun...

one of those really hard things to call...but then i know alot of people who will say...agha pashtun na de paday che pashto nashi walay...
MY PUKHTUN PRIDE I CANNOT HIDE! FOR ASLONG AS I LIVE! TILL THE DAY THAT I DIE!

turko-mongolian dont use khan as surname, it was an old historic title, most (not all) indians and pakistanis use it to conceal their embarassing past, to show more respectable ancestry.

i agree, we should use our traditional family names, popal, kakar, sadafkhel etc etc. and of course arabic names (islamic ones) are best for islamic identity, but traditional pashtun names should be there as well to reflect our cultural identity, after all identity is purpose of a name.

as for wanabees, well what if an indian names his son zarak mohamadzai or zalmai afridi, i am sure they can change names, BUT how will they change their fathers/uncles/cousins name from Mannubhai Patel. no one can run away from who they really are. they have to be dedicated pashtun wannabees to make sure all members of a generation learn pashtu, rare. dont worry about the wannabee, it is easy to tell who is genuine.
