Sal, i know exactly what your talking about, i think i can relate to this, its only in the north of england.. what you gotta understand is that you have alot of people like "chachees" "hindkos" and just random people that are labelled as 'pataan' by people back home, so they are technically pataan, in your head your thinkin pataan is exclusivly to people that speak pashto but its not, the urdu speaking ones are 'patans', however your not a 'pataan' though your a 'pashtun' however when someone says 'are you a pataan?' its easier to say yes because they just mean by that 'not punjabi'...

What angers me is every Pakhtun wannabe is now adding the name "Khan" to their children's last name... had a debate with a wannabe Pakhtun who told me their previous generations were Pakhtun. I told them that no matter how many times they put Khan or Pakhtun behind their name no one will call them Khan. I do not have Khan in my name but every other guy in Pak calls me "Khan Sahib" when I visit them down south(which is a Pakhtun label and I like) but why do the Punjabies feel the need to be name their kids "Khan"... Does this anger anyone else?
To me Pakhtu is not just a language or a dress, its a culture. Language is a big part of it but NOT the ONLY part of it. Its a culture comprising of many traditions. You cannot say you are pakhtun when you have lost all aspects of it. I know americans who can speak Pakhtu but they are not Pakhtun, same I know the children of migrants to the US who do not speak Pakhtu but follow the culture... in my opinion they are Pakhtun but would prefer if they knew the language. My kid(when I have them) will be taught the language and be better than I am with writting and reading. I will also make them learn Persian(being from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) my grandparents used to write my father in perisan too! That was nice....Last edited by laevanay; 05-18-2011, 03:07 PM.From the creator of www.pakhtun.com and its web forum Da Pukhtano Majlas the complete Pakhtun website!!!
