  • How different are Pashto and Farsi?

I want to know how different are Pashto and farsi? Can a Pashto speaker for example understand Farsi? or vice versa?

  • #2
    ^earth and sky!

so much so that a Dari/Farsi speaker can hardly ever learn pashto. Pashto is a very difficult language compared to Farsi... farsi is very easy to learn especially the day to day conversation farsi.

i will give you example of hi hello.

    Pashto:

salam alaikum starrey mashai...tsanga ye? jorr pakhair? sehat de kha dai? kor kei de khairat dei?

Dari: Salam, manda na bashi, chei haal dari, khob asti? khana khairat.

do you see any similarity other than a couple of words?

      A lot of difference.

I speak better Dari, then Pashto. And can tell you that Dari is a lot easier. It's SOV, once you get that its elementary. Theirs no gender nouns, no plural/singular

      Translation Dari/English

Dari asan ast. Dari is easy.
      Chutar asti. How are you
Ma khub astam. I am good
Chi mekani? What are you doing
      Ma___Makanem. I am doing____
tsi mekayi khany? What do you want to do?
      Ma mekayam___khanam. I want to do _______
Chi mekayi Bukhari? What do you want to eat

      Translation Pashto/English
Pashto asan day. Pashto is easy
      Tshanga ye. How are you
Za Kha yam. I am good
Tsë Shay kawey. What are you doing?
      Ze__Ghoram. I am doing ______
Te da khorak laypara tsë Shay ghaware. Would would you like to eat

Theirs a somewhat difference between Afghan Farsi (Dari) and Iranian Farsi.

Depending on the speakers, they cannot understand each other. When I hear Iranian Farsi, I have no idea, when they hear Dari, they have no idea.

^ perhaps the problem is just you then because dari speakers can very effortlessly understand iranian farsi and vice versa.

on afghan tv in cali for instance has a significant iranian audience that call in and so on, and vice versa for the iranian programs. my father has a lot of iranian friends with whom he speaks dari and they understand him completely.

Maybe that's in California, in NY, my parents dentist are Persians. And me and my dad can't understand what on Earth they are saying. My mom knows though. And, if we make fun of them in Dari, they have no clue. They speak with a kinda high pitch and soft kind of way. I could pick out some words, but not all. Same with them.

Pashto asan day. Pashto is easy
pashto is feminine so it is pashto asana da.

            Tshanga ye. How are you
            it's tsanga ye.

            .
            Ze__Ghoram. I am doing ______
Ghwaram means I want (masculine). Doing is kawom.

conclusion, you would make a lousy translator.

lol, which state in the US has little to do with it.

the difference between iranian farsi and dari is like british english compared to american english. probably even less so.

i am sorry you and your parents were experiencing problems but that technically does not happen.

there is no such thing as urdu. urdu literally means military as it used to be a secret code language conjured up by the pakistani military after they seceded from india. it is a combination of hindi and farsi.

Pashto and dari are two different languages.
one thing that is common between dari and pashto is that they both use some arabic words.Dari also uses some Pashto words because its lacking that word or that name, the same with Pashto, you may find dari words.

i highly doubt dari uses pashto words.

this forum is full of nobodies spewing nonsensical opinions.

you do not even make any sense.

at least i am consistent. you aren't even that. you need to figure yourself out. on the one hand, you support the taliban and on the other you have karzai's flags flying in your signature.

i am not anything, but an observant person not afraid of saying the truth.

                              be-aqlo.

some of you are merely here to learn pashto so that you can go hop to afghanistan, and collaborate in torture.
