I'm a Yusufzai :D
Everyone KNOWS we're just the loveliest people on earth! :P (kidding!!)
The tribes were (and perhaps still are) necessary for distinction and forming communities in which the members had the same features and practices and all, as were/are the clans within the tribes. Having such a specific identity tends to make life easier for most people. But, of course, it also has its faults: we become so divided that we end up having tribal feuds among with other.
Perhaps with some time, there won't be any need, and all Pukhtuns will get along and become one united *nation*. But I think even right now, members of online Pukhtun communities seem to classify themselves as Yusufzais/Durranis/etc. only to be able to tell where we're all from. After all, we all feel happy when we meet someone from our own village, don't we?
