  • Pashto similarities with Sanskrit

    According to most linguists, Pashto is a member of the Iranian branch of the Indo-European languages and therefore more closely related to Dari than to Sanskrit and the other members of the Indic branch of the Indo-European languages. As such, some of the words that quote as being derived or similar to Sanskrit are in fact more closely allied to their Dari counterparts. (in red is the Dari)

    I am trying to find Pashto words that are closely assimilated with ancient Sanskrit, Aramaic, Avestan (Avesta) and Vedi languages.

    So far, Pashto language has kept its original versions. Let me share some of these words with you and if there is anyone who can think of others, please share it. I am hoping to compile them in a booklet in the future. Anyone who wants to correct me is welcomed.

    Sanskrit – Pashto – English

    Baalaka = halaka = boy

    Maatr = moor = mother ( maadar)
    gRha = kore = house

    nara = nar = male (man) (nar - male)

    girih = ghar = mountain

    siMha = zimaray = lion

    mesa = posa = sheep

    uSTra = ush/ukh = camel (ushtar)

    khaada = khwara = food (khworaak or khwor)

          Samima Sanskrit predates pashto by a lot. Sanskrit is the sister language of Avestan (which pashto takes its roots from), so it makes sense as to why such similarities exist.

              Dear Pashtunistan, I will add the Armenian versian where it sounds similar:
              Sanskrit-Pshto-English-Armenian
              Baalaka = halaka = boy=balik(child)
              Maatr = moor = mother ( maadar)= mayr(genitive form or root form is Mor)
              girih = ghar = mountain=qar(stone),sar(mountain)
              uSTra = ush/ukh = camel (ushtar)=ught
              khaada = khwara = food (khworaak or khwor)=kerel(eaten)
              zaavaka = choghaka = bird=chahruk(buzzard)
              azva = ass = horse (male) (asb)=asp
              bhaya = vera/bera = fear=vay,vakh
              zura = zurawar = brave (zor - strength)=zor, zoravor
              zuura = zrawar = braveman=zoravar
              bandhi = bandi = prisoner (banda)=band(prison)

              Some other parallel words i found are:

              Pashto-Armenian-English:

              speen=spitak=white
              anar=nur=pomegranate
              Azadavèl=azatvel(in dialect azadvel)=to free

              generaly our indefinite verbforms finish with el or al(in anciient also il) - as I undrstood yesterday from the dictionary in Pashto its a bit similar.

                  though not at the scale of dari,alas, pashto has still been arabized to a great extent...ie khalaq is not a pashto word(arabic) but is used as if it is native!!

                  i sometimes wish that an Afghan government would set up an institution of some sort that replaces arabic words with their extant but unspoken counterparts in both dari and pashto. i believe much of the damage can be reconstructed if we replace arabic, turkish and other foreign words with words from avestan, old/middle persian and parthian. etc etc

                    A sleeping person? "Qnats mard"
                    Its like it should be in a couple - he did very well to teach her his language.
                    Yeah i know Abkhazia, they call themselves Apsny.
                    Their language is similar to Cherkez, but is it really similar to Pashto? Thats interesting! Abkhaz is very difficult and has arround 60 sounds. Its considerd northcaucasian(non-indoeuropean). We should invite some Abkhaz - that is really interesting if there is a connection.

                      That is really difficult to do, specially now. Our governmet tried it too, but they faild somehow. But You are right - it is important at least to keep the official language pure.

                        Gadoonwala, I think you are talking about Ossetian.

                        Ossetian and Pashto are the closest languages, and descended from, Avestani.

                          Ossetian is the spoken and literary language of the Ossetes, a people living in the central part of the Caucasus and constituting the basic population of the republic of North Ossetia-Alania, which belongs to the Russian Federation, and of the South Ossetia, which is de facto independent (belongs to the Georgian Republic according to most other states). Ossetian belongs to the Northern subgroup of the Eastern-Iranian group of the Indo-European family of languages. Thus, it is genetically related to the other Eastern-Iranian languages, e.g. Pashto and Yaghnobi.
