    Asalam everyone,
    according to Wikipedia:

    First languages of Pakistan

    Punjabi : 48%
    Sindhi: 12%
    Saraiki: 10%
    Pashto: 8%
    Urdu: 8%
    Baloch: 3%
    Others: 11%
    Ethnic groups of Pakistan
    Punjabi : 44.68%
    Sindhi: 14.10%
    Saraiki: 8.38%
    Pashtun: 15.42%
    Muhajir: 7.57%
    Baloch: 3.57%
    Other: 6.28%

    What I found strange is:
16 Mio people who speak pashto as their first language. 31 Mio pashtuns minus 16 Mio people speaking pashto as their first language equals 15 Mio pashtuns who don't speak pashto as their first language but are pashtuns. That can't be correct because the avarage Pashtun tend to be conservative and don't abandon their language. Another awkward thing is the number of pashtun people rises while the number of punjabi and saraiki native speakers falls.

Cencus results should be out soon but as my estimate About 20 million pashto speakers in kpk, 6 million in karachi, 5 million in balochistan, 3 million in fata and maybe a 1-2 million in punjab.

Assmilated Pashtuns like Abdul Qadir Khan and Imran Khan that lost their language and replaced with punjabi dialects and urdu

also , 50% of hindko speaking people are Pashtun in the tribal sense, like the dilazaks and swatis, then the rest of the hindkos who are awan or jat or mughal aren't pashtun in the tribal sense.

Most Muhajirs are Urdu-speakers. "Muhajir" is a designation for Muslim migrants from modern-day India.

I can't imagine that half of the Pashtuns assimilated to an another culture eventhough living next to their own kinds.

Forget that, i have found some Pushtana that speak Urdu, and say 'My father works in the Army' when I confront them on not speaking/knowing Pashto!

P.S. The first time I met such a person was in Islamabad, a 'Huge WTF Moment' for me!

There are loads like that. In fact almost all of them prefer to speak Bollywood language as opposed to Pashto. LOL hilarious.

That can be one of the reason why the figures of ethnic Pashtuns and pashto native speakers differ so much.

On wiki it says 8 % of Pakistani population speak pashto as their native language while the Pashtuns make up 15 % of Pakistan. I guess many pretended to be Pashtun in the last census despite not speaking pashto.
