  • Need help with some Pashto?

Hello there. I am a Pashtun who unfortunantly cant speak Pashto because my Dad cant speak and neither can my mom. I live in USA and have been making an effort to learn Pashto by myself and with the help of friends.

maa shpag miashte makhkay pukhto zda kawal pail okrral, raata dir afsos shwi da zaka za khpala mornay zhaba na wayalay sham, za hatsa kawam che za paak pukhto zda okam, la urdu aw inglisi lughatuna purta. taaso veenai che maa dir progress jorr krray ( progress ta tsa wayi pa pukhto ke ? ) kho za tar usa pokhtanay laram laka :

what does it mean when "ye" is put in the middle of a sentence as in : kabab ye mirch na lari" I thought "ye" mean are (or ho in urdu) as in "tsanga ye?" is there another meaning for ye?

and what does shai mean as in " za ba kabab raaghwarram, ta ba tsa shai raghwarre?'

and how would i say "i have to do this" in pashto? is it maata ba da kaar kawal pakar vee? i asked that to a friend and he said something else and i just get confused

and how would i say should? is it bayad? i heard someone say thats not a word in pashto but if it is then how do i use it cause im confused when it comes to using that word and if it isnt then what is the correct word for should and can i get some examples ?

and how would i use the pashto words raa dar an war in sentences? like i read in pashto texts words like "raaguri, darguri, and warguri? i know guri means is seeing but what about the dar war and raa?

and what does de mean when its in the middle of a sentence like: starge day vee otalay na vee"

and does it make a difference when you use o in your words such as : ka and oka? are they the same or is it used differently?

if i can get a good explanation for this i would be very grateful

ye in this sentence is used as an adjective. In this case it could mean either his, her, or their. I can't tell unless you give the sentence that preceeds it. It probably means their in this context, their kabab is not spicy (literally does not have spice).

The other forms of the adjective are:

me - my - kabab me mirch lari
de- your - kabab de mirch lari
mo - your (p) - kabab mo mirch lari
ye - his, her, its, their -kabab ye mirch lari

Pashto is more complex than the other S and W Asians that I am familiar with, and their is multiple ways of conveying the same info. For example, in your example, one can use a completely different set of adjectives such as

Da duh (hagho) kabab mirch na lari - his kabab is not spicy
Da de (haghe) kabab mirch na lari - her kabab is not spicy
Da doy (haghoy) kabab mirch na lari - their kabab is not spicy

When using these adjectives you can tell the gender or whether singular or plural, but with ye you can't. You have to have the other sentences that go with it.

ta ba tsa shai raghwarre?' What thing would you like. Shai is thing

    Bayad is should

    Wa janaana dumra kho kawa

      Explain your origins?

Are you Hindkowan? You sure that both your parents are Pashtuns in the tribal sense ? Not from another tribe like Jat, Awan, Mughal?

Are you from Afghanistan but your family has been persianized?

I am PAshtoo too, but i am urdu speaking mohajir pakistani karachite . My families have been fully pashtun before partition of india-pak, making me pashtun from both parents but we forgot pashto 150 years ago, i think i am rohillah pashtun, some community in northern india.

You got it. Just some minor corrections

For plural (eyes) use starge de shne di
Laka is used before the noun and it means like, eg gul laka
Ghunde is used after the noun, and it also means like eg gul ghunde
In pakistan they also use pe shaan for like. Also sfter the noun

As far as war ra and dar, they are directional so ra directs to the speaker
Eg kitab ra ka - give me the book
War directs to 3rd person eg kitab war ka- give him/her the book
Dar directs to the person being spoken dar ta wayam i tell you

          Wa janaana dumra kho kawa
