  • Can anybody tell me??

    Hi guys!

We all know that there is a pashto alphabet "ے" called prata ya which is used in Pakhtunkhwa but in afghanistan it has been replaced by "ی" (bey takko ya) i have gone though many old books where i found prata ya including those written by Prof Habibi sb. So the question is when did it was decided to replace it with "ی"?

ے is not Pashto or present Farsi alphabets but is an Urdu alphabet known as Bari Ye. It crept into Pashto due to the influence of Urdu on Pashto.
If you open Raverty's 1867 dictionary of Pashto you will not find it.

So ی is Pashto and ے is not.

ے also creates difficulty in Pashto:
      1) ے is used for both ی [narina ye] and ې [pasta ye] now this has the same in "e" sound in Peshawar dialect but in the other dialects ی has an "ay" sound while only ې has an "e" sound.
      2) ی in Pashto serves a purpose to indicate that the word is a masculine noun. If ے is used this will not be evident to the reader [lwastawoonkay] and Pashto is destroyed.

Hence we should not use ے as it is not Pashto and it destroys the foundation of Pashto.
Thanks for the reply but my question is not which alphabet is pashto and which one is urdu or parsian. I dared to ask since when "ے" was replaced with "ی" in Afghanistan as i have read a few books published there in 1950s and found "ے" there in.
Pashto only have few of its own alphabets i.e ټ٬ ځ٬ څ٬ ډ٬ ړ٬ ږ٬ ښ٬ ڼ others are common alphabets with Arabic, Persian and urdu etc. Even the "ی" which have replaced "ے" is also a part of Urdu Alphabetic list. "ے" has been used by by many writers including Prof. Habibi and Gul Muhammad Wazir etc in Afghanistan and i believe it has been replaced by "ی" in afghanistan as soon as it vanished from Persian.

How does "ے" creates difficulty in pashto? the examples you has given doesn't make sense :
      1) "ے" is only used for singular masculine nouns and the verbs that comes with it for example:
      سړے راغلے دے چايې څښي
It is never used instead of "pasta/makhsusa ya" i.e ې
      2) "ے" do the same and indicate a singular masculine noun like سړے٬ سپے٬ غويے٬ منګے٬ پوزے etc and doesn't it make sense? isn't it evident to the reader?

Pashto isn't ruined with the the alphabet that has been in use since ages but yea the so called purification of the language, introducing new words without keeping in view the basic grammatical rules does ruin it.

If you any argument (other than this that Prata ya is urdu alphabet) then go ahead

I have seen PH.D degree holders who can't write Pashto correctly . I don't think one need any certificate/degree to be expert in his mother tongue. Qalandar Momand a famous pashto linguist, writer, journalist, poet and critic was a master degree holder in English literature yet his services to pashto literature are more than any body else. The Director of Pashto Academy and Dion of Oriental Languages in Peshawar University , Dr. Raj wali Shah Khattak was his pupil while he was doing PH.d.
No, the writers i mentioned did purification of Pashto in their times and have valuable services in the field. infact one of them i.e Gul Mhammad has written a book named "leekdod" where he lays the guidelines for pashto writing.
