  • How to learn pashto?

    salam everyone,

I am new to this forum and have a question

I am originally from Afghanistan but live in Canada, and can only speak farsi (I can't read or write well), can't speak pashto at all.
However, I am very interested in learning pashto, but I don't know how easy it is and how to learn it (I don't know where to find a book to learn, or do I need a teacher?).

The other thing is, I don't visit Afghanistan often, and most afghans speak farsi, so should I take the time to learn pashto? or maybe learn a language I will use more if I visit another country like french or arabic?

    thank you

any language you want to learn, you ought to listen a lot and improve vocabulary.

Thank you wrora. How long do you think it will take me to learn pashto to a level which most pashto speakers can have a normal conversation with me?

It depends how much time do you give to your learning and how many people do you communicate with in pashto language.
if you give 8 hours a day to learning. you can learn it in 6 months.

Learning any language including Pashto needs RPS. RPS means Receptive(Reading, Listening) and Productive(Speaking , Writing) Skills. To reach this , you need Grammar and Vocabulary(both passive and active).

If you know Dari or Persian(which are almost the same language), then there is no need to learn Pashto for Afghanistan. With Persian you can communicate easily almost everywhere in Afghanistan. Pashtuns unfortunately eagerly speak Dari and you will feel no need to use Pashto. However in Pakistan, Dari is not understood and you may need to learn it if you do not speak Urdu.

However if you have some especial interest in Pashto like its literature or talking to Pashtuns in their own langauge or you coming from Pashtun ancestry or a day come that Pashto is put on equal footing with Dari in Afghanistan then may be for official reasons you will need Pashto.

Pashto is not an easy language and need full dedication and effort. We are here to help you in every aspect.
