• Couldn't find a proper way to learn pashto

Hello All members,

While I have registered on the site for learning pashto language but as I am exploring the forum I could not find a proper source for the language learning.
I found basic lessons that are very limited in terms of depth.
Whats the reason ?

Thanks.

The reason is simple: the resources are limited in general. There aren't too many materials to learn Pashto. There aren't too many Pashto linguists who could write such books ....

Also depends what you want.

You can, I think really improve your reading/writing via the forum just by following one of the threads dedicated to these skills. Speaking/listening with its formalities and colloquialisms is going to be a bigger challenge because you need a more immediate response. Nothing beats using the language in a 1 to 1 situation.

There should be tutors that teach via videos like skype or anyother tool

It's good to see the replies from some of the members. IT makes me feel good that this forum is alive and there are people who are giving due time to the improvement of the platform and also helping for those who are curious to learn pashtun culture , pashto language etc.

Well, I am a newbie to the pashto world. zama nom aslam de and I am a computer engineer and want to learn pashto language.
Once I visited youtube for visual language learning but it seems that there are many pashto dialects and its difficult to distinguish these accents and dialects hence I abandon learning pashto from youtube. and I used to watch AVT Khyber and found these words in almost every sentence i-e 'Ao chikam de' and 'daga daga...'

So is there any member who would like to teach me via skype to rectify my accents and mistakes.

Thanks

What is your language background? What would be your own level of Pashto and do you have any Pashtuns around you?

As for accent/dialect. Whilst I always argue that Pashto is the same language across its speakers, I do acknowledge that for limited speakers, some dialects present a challenge but that is the same for many languages. Lots of exposure to spoken and colloquial forms and formal reading gets round that one though. Perhaps you might want to start with selecting the dialect closest to the one you will use most regularly. Easy enough to build up after that.

aslam, you are never going to learn pashto by being on this website.

The only way for you is to live in Peshawar for one year. Then you will speak even better pashto than the local pathans.

Oh God ! This is not possible to go Peshawar in order to learn pashto. That would be hectic.

Yes There are two pashtuns in the firm where I am working, one from parachinar and one from quetta , they both hardly understand each other .
I used to learn from the one who belongs to parachinar.

Differences of Pashto dialects are always exaggerated by non Pashtuns or those who do not want to see the development of Pashto. There is always a core language. We first learn English then specialize in British or American English.

Once you learn the core Pashto, you will be able to use any dialect. Its not a big deal to say kha or sha , keegi or keeji. There are some geo-synonyms but the core vocabulary is the same. Grammar is the same.

I have offered you Mr. Aslam to join the link given above and share your issues there. Action not always complaints!

I know friends from Parha Chinar and Quetta. They perfectly understand each other. The only difficult accent can be from Khost, Bannu or Waziristan because they use more zer(mer in place of mor). But once you get used to the nuance, and when you hear mer(mother), you immediately understand that it is mor. Other wise the only notable difference is khin/shin, j/g in hard and soft dialects.

All other differences in all accents of Pashto are mainly of vowel endings. For example you will usually hear zama(mine) but may hear zomo in some accents. But the word does not change. It is like the difference of Dari and Iranian Persian. Dari sound MA, while Persian MO.
