    3. What other way can we say د جمعې شپه
De Jumey shpa is Thursday evening, so de ziyarat/panjshambe maskhutan?

    5. How would you translate (into Pashto) the following:
    • I am well
    • I do not know
    • I am sorry
Can we find the answers in the text and match up the Pashto script and the English (copy and paste)?
    1) زه ښه يم
    2) زه خبر نه يم
    3) بخښنه غواړم

Here's a link to a discussion that was had in another thread, including the two possibilities that Mesbah listed plus the example of calling Thursday Da Jume Shpa د جمعې شپه. To my understanding there isn't a single naming convention for the days of the week. More here. In general however, the pattern below is the one used by the Pashto language media:

        Saturday (Khalee/Shamba) شنبه / خالی
        Sunday (Itbar/Itwar/Yekshamba) یکشنبه / اتبار/ اتوار
Monday (Gul/Doshamba) دو شنبه / ګل
Tuesday (Nahe/Seshamba) سه شنبه / نهې
        Wednesday (Shoro/Charshamba) چهارشنبه / شورو
        Thursday (Zyarat/Panjshamba)* پنجشنبه / زیارت
        Friday (Juma) جمعـه

*Thursday also known as (Da Jume Shpa) د جمعې شپه

Used in Urdu too. I guess we can't totally escape the influence of neighbouring languages. Just like days of the week (see above). Many Pashto speakers simply use the Dari/Farsi or Urdu days of the week.

Mmm ... maybe "spring clean" the spoken language? Another thread perhaps ...

Another one for your collection Mesbah! Though I think perhaps this one should be shared with Shlombay.

Mhm, you're definitely right. Actually we use the Dari names for days of the week at home as well, though my dad has recently started using the Pashto names for it (ywanai, dwanai etc) lol lets hope we stick to it. And I remember in Peshawer people used to always use the Urdu terminology for it. Spring cleaning would be nice for sure lol

                      Not a happy situation.

                          Shlombay,

Just like how Pashtuns have added Dari in Pashto, and Tajiks have added Pashto in Dari, our Pakistani brothers have added a bit Urdu in Pashto.

Its perfectly normal, All languages are wonderful and are worthy to be respected. Lets work on revitalizing our Pashto.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

                            د پښتو اووم (۷) درس

                            ګران ملګري، سلامونه

As per previous formats, today, I share a conversation again between two people. This time the two speakers are not named in the script, but the conversation moves gently between them in a fairly fluid way, so there shouldn't be too much confusion in the dialogue. I've also coloured the text to show the change in speaker.

As I go through and edit the texts, I know that my own reading and typing is improving, I thought I'd do a task around that today.

As usual the link to the original text is here: http://gloss.dliflc.edu/products/glo...14_source.html

Today's exercise is in two parts. It is a little different, in that your responses Part A responses will come in Pashto. Look at the dialogue and try to figure the missing words. I've made it easier by keeping the word bank colours the same as the speakers. I'm being a little more ambitious, but I think if anyone has been following the texts and my question styles then Part B of this should be familiar.

P.S. If this is a challenge, do not be put off - make the attempts that you feel comfortable with - everyone's pitch is slightly different. If there is anything that contributors are unsure about in regards to this text, ask away. Remember, the پښتو درس is about learning and all contributors are here to support and help and welcome everyone's attempts InshAllah.

                            Part A: Cloze Exercise
