    I've been asked, so I think I'll share a small tool ...

    This is downloadable from: http://pashtoword.bravehost.com/download.html

It's actually, pretty good, if you want to type fast in Pashto-Roman script. You type in "English" and it converts to Pashto.

You have to make careful judgements between the "English" and the Pashto however.

    E.g.

    afghnsthaan افغانستان

    paaksthaan پاکستان

I also notice that the word processor is missing ط and ظ

No good it you want to write Watan and want it to show as وطن

Still its a good place to start. So download away and start writing in Pashto!

              پښتو درس

              Pakhto Dars

              د پښتو څلورم (۴) درس

Pa Bismillah au da Salaamoona sara - Welcome to the latest Dars.

We've had some brilliant postings on Pashto typing and I would like to thank anyone who has shown an interest and encourage you all to explore.

Today we have another situational conversation and we are introduced to two new characters. It's a simple conversation about food shopping (that is all in the ways of clues that I will reveal here).

It surprises me that this is still considered Level 1, and I have made a number of changes to the text in order to make the language easier to read.
Interestingly we will be using a word نږدې that is the same as the word نژدی from a few days back. Notice the difference in type.

I am coming to accept these and despite my dictionary checks, both are acceptable. The 'problem' for a person like me is that my spellings end up spanning a number of dialects in Pashto. Still ... I did say this was a place to learn and that I am like others here, a student of our beautiful language.

The passage appears to be longer than previous passages, so I may return with a second set of questions ... (or perhaps a keen reader can generate a set of questions to go with this ...).

The good thing is that there are many repeats. This is great because it helps us form word recognition and helps improve our reading skills.

              Questions:

              1. Who are the two speakers?
              2. What does the introduction tell us?
              3. Where is the market?
              4. What is
              تازه غوښه
              5. Define قصابي and نانواي
              6. Where can you buy vegetables from?

                AoA Tor Khana!

Nazia just made this thread today:

Learn and understand the Pashto language and its many dialects by referring to many well documented guides and conversations produced by forum members.

it is very detailed with pictures on showing how to type in Pushto.

I used it myself, the 1st link works, the rest dont.

I Inshallah plan on writing poetry of Khushal Baba with it soon.

                Wassalam and hope it helps.

PS: for more ease, make that keyboard a background wallpaper or print it and keep it with yourself, that will make typing much faster.

                  Questions:

                  1. Who are the two speakers?
                  Saleem and Ajmal

                  2. What does the introduction tell us?
Saleem and Ajmal talk about shopping at home (?) (can't word it right)

                  3. Where is the market?
De khaar pe tsenda ke yaw market dai ...

                  4. What isتازه غوښه
                  Fresh Meat

                  5. Define قصابي and نانواي
                  Qasaabi - Butcher
                  Naanwayi - Bakery

                  6. Where can you buy vegetables from?
I know the answer is in the last line for this one, but I don't know how to word it. Ajmal buys it from a nearby market when he doesn't have time, but when he does, he goes to a 'loy market' (?).

Mesbah - you're absolutely right about the second and last answer ... the conversation about shopping does take place at home and yes there are two places to buy the vegetables and yes Ajmal chooses to buy them from either the nearby store or the market according to the time he has ...

                    Brilliant as usual Mesbah ...

... are you ready to organise the next Dars ... ?

Not quite yet, but I am willing to in a few lessons time, InshaAllah. If I do come up with something before that, I will definitely share. My assessments are a bit over the top nowadays. In my spare time, I will do some browsing/reading and a lot of talking with Dad. What would the next lesson be about? A similar comprehension sort of one, or can I give it a twist?

                      Folks, please do contribute too.

                        پښتو درس

                        Pakhto Dars

                        د پښتو پنځم (۵) درس

په بسم الله او د سلامونه سره ډیر ډیر پخیرونه

I thought I'd try some vocab/word recap today. It seems appropriate to do something like this and perhaps a fifth lesson look-back makes sense.

The idea here is for contributors is to match the Pashto with the English by copying and pasting. There may be a couple of repeats - this is deliberate - it helps consolidate what we are learning.

In the first instance match them to the words provided in the word bank. All we have to do is copy and paste, and I suggest that we only use words from the word bank for this exercise. (Note: The first word bank has a couple of red hearings!)

Remember, this is easy - all we do is copy and paste!

                        Ready? Here goes:

                        Part A

                        1. کباب
                        خوند .2
                        ورځ .3
                        واخله .4
                        مارکیټ .5

                        Word Bank:

                        market, meatballs, taste, bread,
                        kebab, where, day, take

                        Part B

                        1. corner
                        2. bread
                        3. father
                        4. where
                        5.
                        assistance

                        Word Bank:
پلار ,کنج ,خدمت, ډوډۍ , چيرته

Tor Khan wrora, how important is it to differentiate between two genders when conversing? I mean do we constantly need be aware of masculine and feminine forms? The reason why i ask is because i was working on my Pashto lessons today, and i saw the difference of 'starai mashey' between using masc. and fem.,is it really needed?

Masc/Feminine noun forms are absent in Farsi (like English), but not so in Pashto. To a single gentlemen you would say, "Staray Mashey", to a single lady you would say "Staree Mashey", to a mixed audience you would say "Staree Masheyy" (hang on the the "y" sound at the end for emphasis).

                                Opinions on this people?
