    Da Pukhto Dars Jawabuna

Many thanks to ✓ Mesbah, ✓ Spogmai Shaglay, ✓ Kandahary, ✓ Pashtun Queen, ✓ Pukhtana, ✓ Hindu Pashtun, ✓ Chino & ✓ Swat for taking part in the last Dars. The main aim from the Dars was to encourage responses using Pashto script. For most this was ✓✓✓ successful and in general for many that took part, answers came back in full. Where there were some small gaps, efforts were sincerely appreciated.

Part A was a board navigation task where I listed the English title and asked for the Pashto. Correct responses (copied/pasted) were as below:
    1. Hujra حجره
    2. Pashto Language
    3. New Member
    4. Science
    5. Fashion
    6. Pashtun History

Part B was a reading task where I asked for phrase/sentence responses, again showing the English and asking contributors to copy/paste the Pashto. Responses below:

    • The aroma of pulao from a popular shop reached him

    • The poor man was surprised

    • He said to everyone that the story’s decision would be taken tomorrow

    • He met Mullah Nasserudeen

    • He told the judge that he was the poor man’s brother

Great effort by all those who participated. I never tire of the badges, so here's another one to all those mentioned.

A word of thanks also to Osho, Shlombay, Admin Khan, and Iqra for generally being supportive of the efforts to keep Pashto relevant, and of course Yusufzai Pakhtun, the evergreen Feroz Afridi Jan for their continued brilliance and their knowledge.

      • Spogmai - that made good sense -

Jasmine - the lessons just seemed to have grown/evolved somewhat organically. I haven't really timed/paced them, but at its simplest, I know what I want in terms of objectives or where I wanted to go with them.

For me I want people who already use the spoken language to be familiar with the written language too, so that's why I've picked short texts and gradually moved towards making it necessary to respond using Pashto (text). That bit is not easy, since if we go back to the first lesson and the commentaries in this and other threads, I acknowledge that the standards appear to vary, and this led to some differences in all our understandings.
The پښتو درس seems to have become attached to me - but it's a collective effort and from the outset, I've kept the space open for other other teachers - I'm keen to sit in the student chair and see how this works from the other point of view too! Osho is doing some great work at a more elementary level where there are good explanations of things like grammar and syntax.
Apparently if you Google the Pashto text پښتو درس we get the first hit!!

        Wow!!

Add Your Name to the PashtunForums Name Wall

As this Dars has developed we have focused on familiarisation of Pashto script and the beginnings of writing. The previous Dars required responses exclusively in Pashto which were possible by using copy/paste so no keyboarding in Pashto was necessary. I did suggest a challenge at the end of the Dars – and that was to post back your answers with your user name written in Pashto. This didn’t happen, so I want to use that as my starting point.

Firstly, I’d like to thank Sangar for making the suggestion that we could turn this into a PashtunForums “competition” - this was linked to a discussion we had on Pashto language calligraphy. I haven’t thought out the details yet … but in anycase I’d like your participation. Start by looking at this. It’s actually a mix of Pashto and English and comes from a random posting on my blog.

What I’d like to do, with the participation of PashtunForum members is create a name wall where members submit their User Name (in Pashto) and this gets added to a name wall created in a Web 2.0 application like Wordle. It’s great for several reasons (1) writing in Pashto (2) sense of community (3) posterity - a wall of fame, capturing a snapshot in the history of PashtunForums. Some of you have fun user-names, so I expect this to be interesting.

In case you need to get started with writing in Pashto, choose one of the following four ways to get started:

          1. Nazia’s wonderful tutorial - basically how to add Pashto keyboarding to the Windows environment
          2. Download and Install a Pashto Phonetic Keyboard by following this link – it comes from our very own Feroz Afridi’s Destar website - it adds the Pashto option to the bottom right of your screen (DON’T be put off by the Panjabi label – it IS Pashto in fact) and it means that unlike Option 1 here which shows you how to add the Pashto keyboarding option and has a scattered keyboard – this one reconfigures your keyboard so that Alif is A, Bey is B, Tey is T etc. You’ll be keyboarding in no time!
          3. Thanks to Laila for previously suggesting this auto-translator - it converts your English to Pashto. It has worked previously, but at the time of writing, it was being less cooperative – anyway, worth trying
          4. (Probably the easiest, but not always very accurate) Download Pashto Word by following the link – basically it is a little tool that allows you to write in English e.g. Tor Khan and it converts it into Pashto تور خان

Ok, so with all these options, keyboarding/writing in Pashto is going to be a breeze, InshAllah. I suggest you post directly to the board – if you have any queries, these can be raised in a PM, but I’d like to go for the maximum number of postings.

P.S. Spread the word - look forward to your responses InshAllah.
P.P.S. If you know someone who is shy, but wouldn't mind you typing up their name check with them, their names can also be added.

                      Pakhto Dars

                      Salaamoona Malgaree,

I wanted to give the Dars a little rest before resuming it, and I really wanted someone to take this over! I feel strongly that as a community we all have something to bring and something to learn and so I continue in my belief that this is an open space and that as a student of Pashto myself, I have much to learn from others.

That said, I present to you Dars number 11. This text, I liked because it discusses weather, seasons and I found it to be a simple enough read that I could extract a number of learning points. The more we hear Pashto spoken in different ways, the better we become at seeing the continuum of our language. In my part of the Pashto speak world, sun is نور (said as nwar) and the style here used is slightly different (پسرلی is also written سپرلی).

The audio for the text is here http://gloss.dliflc.edu/products/glo...25_source.html

I may take the liberty of breaking this up into a few parts and return to this audio later.

PM me your responses as usual.

                      1. What areفصلونه
                      2. Copy and Paste the Pashto for "Every season is 3 months long".
                      3. What phonemes are represented by these letters ځ ړ څ ږ ?
                      4a. What season is پسرلی
4b. How is this air described in this season (copy the Pashto and translate)

                      5. What else do we know about spring?

                      • Appendum -

For the couple of questions that I got about phonemes and what this means.

Phonemes are the sounds within a language and how they are represented. In many languages outside English there is a one-to-one relationship with the letter i.e. ف makes /f/ sound in Arabic, Farsi, Urdu, Pashto etc. (In English ph and f both make the same sound /f/). In Pashto this is simpler so for example the letter ش makes the sound /sh/, پ makes /p/. Because dialects sometimes have different ways of saying the same thing (and therefore different phonemes), in Pashto modified letters are used. A good example is ښ in پښتو which makes the /sh/ /ش/ sound or /kh/ /خ/ sound according to dialect.

Hope this clears up the matter with regards to phonemes.

                          • Yes, nazia, that's 'zeem' so it gives off the same sound as a 'zay'. In some dialects, it's pronounced as 'jeem' though.
"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be".

"Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives".
