  • Words unique to your dialect

    Pakhto is a very diverse language. Often when I look at a Pashto dictionary, I see words that i'd never heard of before.

    If you think there are any words that people only from your village, province or tribe use then share them.

    Would be interesting to see if other people use the same word or have heard of that word too.

        We use chorrakay. Might not be so unique, but Kwar for grapes. I mostly hear people use angoor.

                  Wardag has many unique words (or so i'm told). I would like to know just how unique they are.

                  'Paastai' in Wardag pakhto is used specifically for thin bread baked in a tunoor...like chapati.

                    There are so many:

                    zanrrkaye = halak
                    mazhakayi = spozhmayi
                    chig = to lift, high
                    marrayi = doddayi
                    lishki = lazh
                    alay = here
                    ooray = there
                    pass = up
                    chaila = goat
                    shooday = milk
                    "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be".

                    "Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives".

                      khwabadi -- it means the same as 'khafa' in other dialects.
                      Shlawal = to stretch(I've seen other dialects use other words)

                      "Za sta sa khwabadi yama".
                      "Sara wa me shlawey".
                      Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

                      A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

                      For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

                      The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

                            Shlawal is not the same as Tsiriwal in my dialect. I am also pretty confident that it's not the same in the Yusufzai dialect.

                            In fact, it's actually also commonly used for warnings "Sara wajhey wala shlawam kadey XYZ kaar prai nazhdi".
