  • Give Pashto official status!

Hey, Urdu is our national language. How dare these Indian agents try to implement Pashto (of all languages) on us?! Long live Urdu! Death to Indian agents!
"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be".

"Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives".

This is a report of the 21st of February 2010, 21st Feb being the International Day of Mother Languages. This was the day when the Pak Army killed 30 Moslem Bengali students who demanded official status for the Bengali language in Dhaka. PkMAP also held a seminar in Peshawar Press Club on the same day and demanded that PASHTO be made the official language of education, state instotutions and media in North, South and Central Pakhtunkhwa.
And here is the peak of *******ism: I recently came to know that the Pak Govt instituted a commission to find proposals for the national language of Pakistan in 1951. This commission decided that Bengali should be made the official language if and only if, listen to this, if the Bengali is converted from the Indic script to the Arabic script.

Lolzz you people failed to make Pashto as official language in real terms in Afghanistan and you are getting angry over the same for our country.

      What a contradiction.

Isnt that Pashto and Dari are official language in Afghanistan BUT still Dari has always been used for business and government transactions.????????

Karzai took oath in Dari and NOT Pashto.

What is the percentage of Pashto speaking population in Afghanistan currently ?

And BTW whats the use of making any language as official language when all official work is done in English

Lollzz this is your defence. First of all why are you arguing against this demand? This is a legitimate issue, we are Pashtuns and Pashto should be official. Second of all, no need to low blow Afghanistan, as at least there Pashtu is the official and national language. It is the language of the anthem by the constitution of Afghanistan. Third of all, Tajiks are more urban, more educated and their areas are more peaceful, so they have been able to corner many important sectors in Afghanistan nowadays. Even today, if you go any Pashtun dominated area in Afghanistan, pashto is used on the boards, in media, in writing, as part of the curriculum. Fourthly, this protest took place in Pashtunkhwa, hence the demand for pashto to be official in "pakhtun dominated areas". This is so clear, but you choose to overlook it interesting. Fifth of all, this is a pashtun forum, so all things pertaining to Pashtuns are discussed together. If there is an issue in Swat, then Pashtuns from all over have the right to discuss it and put their views forward. Obviously a local has more insight in to issues, so they have more credibility (generally speaking). Language is part of identity, it is part of culture. We should maintain our mother tongue and learn English as well. This is a lame response by you at best.

P.S. Paighor ala kawaa che kalaa dae lass kae tsa waak wee, che pakhpalaa yaw zae kae naasth yae ao zhaba dae heetss haisyath na laree nu paighor khwand na kaee, asae ba badh khkaarae. Pashtunkhwa has maintained its pashto language, for that we are proud of the pashtun mothers who taught us that, and this is a plus point in Pashtunkhwa. However, we are a minority in Pakistan, and a minority in a country where the majority don't have an identity but an identity complex. Why should we lose ours to become like them? Furthermore, we should encourage the improvement of pashto where in lar wathan or bar wathan.

Unfortunately Pukhtunkhwa did not maintain the pashto language in true sense. there are different systems of schools here ranging from Govt to Public schools and then those govt schools where they had syllabus in Pashto in the past but almost none currently.

I remember my father was very disappointed to see that Pashtun teachers were even unable to teach read and write Pashto so he used to teach me read and write the Pashto at home. And when i go back to my school i used to teach the class when it was turn of Pashto subject.

The bottom line is we need to have some dedicated time for teaching Pashto along with teaching all other major specially foreign Languages like English.

Lets make Pushto the Official Language of Peshawer than worry about Afghanistan. Ive met Tajiks who speak Fluent Pushto from Afghanistan, show a single Punjabi or Indian Mojjahir who speaks Pushto in the 1000's?

This trashy Urdu, which isnt even a proper language but a mixture of Hindu and Dari should not be imposed on Pashtun areas.

What do you expect from the Pro Pakistani Lobby,I bet their commanding officer has told them since childhood that Urdu will be the language of Heaven hahaha

You see these cheap tactics they always divert it to Afghanistan and blaime Afghanistan for everything.

Jana, don't fool yourself or others. I am from Pashtunkhwa, so that double standard nonsense doesn't work here. If you would like to start a thread to discuss the issues of pashto in Afghanistan by all means do it. However, you did paighor to divert the issue, nothing more nothing less. That is the problem with pashtuns, great at ddazz dozz, but in real terms nothing to be proud of. Instead of supporting the demand you did three wrong things: (1) assume the place from which some members came from as well as assume certain things about Afghanistan (nadir shah as far as I know , is from south pashtunkhwa, I am from Shangla, etc), (2) create a division among pashtuns, and (3) divert an issue.

P.S. it is good that your father taught you this, and the lack of proper pashto infrastructure is why we should push for these demands.

ahhh wait a minute uptill now when you guys talk of Pashtuns then you say there are no border barriers and Pashtuns of Pakistan and Afghanistan are one and there is no such thing Pakistan in between then why in this case of making Pashto as the ONLY official language for Pashtuns of both sides ??

Why you need another thread for the same issue when its the case of Pashtuns and not areas or countries?

Why not to call for making Pashto the national language of Pashtuns on both sides in real terms and not only just on papers.

P.S. it is good that your father taught you this, and the lack of proper pashto infrastructure is why we should push for these demands.
I agree but demand by certain party/ies for political purpose that too when they are in opposition can not serve the purpose unless our own people sitting in the government dont do anything practical.

besides there are no solid suggestions to keep alive our language.

What do you suggest ? i am keen to hear

Jana you are trying to twist things. I do believe that Pashtuns are one. However, you were the one that tried to divide them, then switch the blame. As I told you, we all have to discuss these issues together. This was a thread on making pashto official in pashtunkhwa, it had nothing to do with pashto in Afghanistan. No one said it was a bed of roses there. However, when the topic is there we should discuss it. You keep on trying to divert issues with the weakest logic I have seen. It is beyond me why you are still trying to hold onto strings.

Now the best possible suggest is to start at the basics, build an infrastructure for the language. Get the best pashto scholars in diaspora, in pashtun areas (lar au bar) to create a sort of trans-governmental institution which will regulate the language, bring new innovations forward and standardize it (similar to what the french do). Second of all, it is important that the governments give a more freer hand to media, so pashto media can get its rightful spot. Third of all, is economy. The more stabilized pashtun areas get, the more people will have to invest. As people invest, they will have to pick up the language the norms, etc. It is no coincidence, investors like Jim Rogers are teaching their children mandarin.

Ask the useless Pashtun political leaders to make it an official language of Peshawar and also ask them to put their own kids in the same schools where Pashto is medium of teaching instead of sending their kids to US and other foreign lands

We have no problem with that.

When my brothers and sisters were getting killed in bombs in Pukhtunkhwa then Asfandyar and others the sons of so called champion of Pashtuns Ghafar Khan, ran away to take shelter in US and Islamabad and shifted their families.

Ghafar khan aka bacha khan is not so called champion of pashtuns, rather a he gave more sacrifices (along with shaheed khan samad khan achakzai, faqir i ipi, mullah turangzai) then all of muslim league combined. He gave more sacrifices than the mohammadzai royalty for Pashtuns. And unlike muslim league, he actually followed his deen, unlike the hypocrites who supported the creation of Pakistan.
Asfandyaar is corrupt and so is ANP of today, but they are angels compared to the army and ISI.

                        Now stop diverting the topic.

                              Never mind.

My only concern is that when others can not and do not wish to put their new generation into something that will make them handicap in the long run viz a viz competing with international systems then why they want the Pashtuns at this side of the border to sink 100 years back.

Now the best possible suggest is to start at the basics, build an infrastructure for the language. 1. for having an infrastructure for Pashto language progress we would need overhauling the entire medium of education in KP.

                              2. If do so then teaching in mother tongue is going to throw us back as compared to all those who are studying in international languages like English.

                              3. Yes i agree with standardisation of Pashto language BUT again the egoistic attitude of all of us with regard to their dialect is going to mar it forever and we are not going to agree so how can that standardisation be availed?? Specially with having so many dialects of the same language. The pashto spoken in Hangu is different, in Swat it has different accent , in Mardan Peshawar its different and in Wazirisran and other tribal agencies the dialect varies.

                              4. Media has become a corporate sector in Pakistan and quite booming and above all the Government here has NOT much influence over the media so if Pashtun investors see benefits in starting channels then NO one is going to stop them. Again it depends on the interest which they will earn so promotion of language for investors doesnt matter much.
