  • A question for Shlombay.

    Shlombay Salaam Alaikum,

How would you say the following sentence in Pashto:

I ate some apples under the shadow of tree.

    Regards,

Shlmobay let me break it down for ya =)

    Drakhta= Farsi
    Sahya/Saya= Farsi

    Tree in Pashto is "Wanna"
    Shadow in Pashto is "Syorai"

Apply this sentence structure and the blend of Farsi to our Kandahari pashto in general

Yeah, there's barely any Pukhto in this sentence.
As Millatpal pointed out, darakht = tree (in Urdu, perhaps in Farsi as well; I wouldn't know). "Saib" is "apple" in Urdu, while "sahya" (or "saaya") is shadow in Urdu.

I think at least most Pukhto-speakers would agree that this is how you'd say the sentence given by Millatpal:

Da waney da soorey da laande me yao so manre ukhwaraley.

"Yao so" = some, few, etc.

It seems kandhari pashto is heavily mixed with dari.

It's possible, yes. But at the same time, it may not be, since just because some Kandaharis speak this way doesn't mean all do; neither does it mean it's the standard dialect of the people there. IF Shlombay represents all Kandaharis, then, yeah, this must be the Kandahri dialect.

Other PF members who're from Kandahar should speak up as well, though, so we can see for sure.

And the reason why Qandahari Pashto is so heavily mixed with Dari is because an Qandahar was the capital of Afghanistan before Temor Shah made Kabul the capital. People from all over Afghanistan went to live and work there. Also.. as far as I know.. it was under Iranian control for a long time, there were a lot of Farsi- and Darizubanan living there. Dari was spoken in all the offices and governmental institutions. This evidently has influenced the Pashto of Qandahar, in view of all the Dari expressions being used in it.

Colloquial Qandahari Pashto is like this.. or even heavier influenced by Dari than this. But formal Qandahari Pashto almost exclusively uses Pashto expressions.
