  • Pashto Zaban

Since many members here can not speak English, yet can speak Urdu here is something in Urdu.

Our respected member Feroz Afridi had emailed me this to share with our community.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Great work here - many thanks to the respected Feroz Afridi.

On a side note, can we officially avoid پٹھانوں/پٹھان etc?

^Believe me or not. Millions prefer to be called that, Its a shame.

Some would go as far saying
      "App Pathan ho?"
      "Nahein, mein Pashtun ho"

      "Pashtun kya hain?"

Its really saddening. Millions do not know what Pashtuns are in Pakistan. I blame it on the Pashtuns themselves who say they are "Pathans" but perfectly speak Pashto. When somebody asks me if I am "Pathan" I try to act like the word Pathan does not exist. I consider it an insult.

I'd rather poke pins into my eyes than call myself Pathan. I so DETEST that word. It is one for Room 101 - you know alongside NWFP, Durand Line, FATA etc.

Pathan, a misnomer and hateful word

Pathan is a curse word, a misnomer, etymologically means robber, child kidnapper, dacoit, its an abusive word, which must be avoided to use for Pashtuns. If a Pashtun is called Pathan then she or he must protest against it because its dishonour , calling names and derogatory. Its racism and racial descrimination. Its a hateful word.

The term or word PATHAN is a misnomer. Many Pashtuns themselves dont understand the ugliness of this loathsome word and use it for them selves with pride. To understand me further please ponder over the following points.

                  1.Etymology of the word Pathan
                  .

Etymologically the word Pathan means robber, kidnapper of children etc. Afghans were called robbers or robbers in India when they srarted invading India. This is why the word Pathan is more common in use when you come from india westward. In india its the most common word for Pashtuns. In Pakistan in Panjab or Sindh its common. But as you go westward towards Afghanistan the word Pathan disappears for Pashtuns and you only hear Pashtun or Afghan never Pathan. For example you will never hear using Pathan for Pashtuns of Afghanistan.

                  2. Its use by non Pashtuns for Pashtuns.

The word pathan is mostly used by non Pashtuns for Pashtuns. Very few Pashtuns and specially non Pashto speakers Pashtuns use it for Pashtuns. When Pashtuns have their own name Pashtun or Afghan then why should they be called by a name which they themselves dont use for them.

                  3.Respect

Compare using Pathan and Pashtun for a Pashtun person and you will feel the difference. With Pathan you imagine a driver, watchman, a non professional or non skilled labourer , street worker, but when with Pahstun you imagine a aperson with a big family or tribe, owner of property or business or a profession.Non Pashtuns often use Pathan for Pashtuns contemptuously. You will never herar using Pashtun or Afghan contemptuously for Pashtuns.

                  4. CONSPIRACY

Using the word Pathan for Pashtuns is subtle conspiracy for dividing Pashtuns of Afghanistan and Pakistan or India culturally and socially. Its another atatck on their division after their political division.

As earlier said the term Pathan is a misnomer , many great scholars even like Sir Olaf Caro and Ghani Khan has used this word Pathan for Pashtuns or Afghans. The word PATHAN should never be sued for Pashtuns which is a disgrace to Pashtuns. Just imagine when you say I am Pashtun and when you say I am Pathan,,,,,,what a difference in the impression of the two wortds,,,,,Pashtun reflects respect, dignity and honour while Pathan a chawkidar, driver, conductor, illitarate person. this is what I FEEL

I am not discriminating none by profession just differentiating an engineer and and a mason or daily wager. Would you like to be a non professional , non skilled labourer or a professional specialist. Then labours like watchman are typically attached with PATHANS not with Pashtuns.

You will feel the difference of PATHAN and PASHTUN in the lips of a hateful Panjabi when he or she uses it ,,When they say Pashtun you will never feel disgraced but with Pathan you will see a scournful smile. They always use PATHAN to disgrace the great PASHTUNS. I always correct people on the spot who call me Pathan.

I am doing research on the etymology and history of the word PATHAN. Whatever I ll discover about this hateful word I ll share.

I am copying the following from the link

                  http://www.paklinks.com/gs/all-views/88 ... ained.html

However a lot of historians traces the roots of word " Pathan " to Sinsikrat language(the oldest Indian language). According to these historian the word " Patt or Pat " in Sanskrit means " daughter " and " han " or " Aan " means kidnaper.......

Its Interesting to mentions a lot of my Punjabi friends and their parents have told me that in Punjab they used to scare kids by saying " go to bed now. Pathans are coming and if you don’t go to bed they will kidnap you " Or " if you do this or do that Pathans will kidnap you " ........

                  Following excerpts from the link

                  http://gl-es.facebook.com/topic.php?uid ... topic=9282

In reality, "Pathan" is a contempuous word used by the Indians for the Parthians, A race of people with absoloutely no connection whatsoever to the Afghan/Pashtun/Pakhtun people, having only area common between them otherwise there is no resemblence between a "Pathan" and an "Afghan/Pashtun/Pakhtun". No self respecting Afghan/Pashtun/Pakhtun will tolerate the word "Pathan" for him/her and it is therefore submitted to every non-Afghan that he should refrain from using it.
                  - taken from " 'Pathan' a misnomer for an Afghan" by Nawab Muhammad Akbar Khan of Hoti...........

The word "Pathan" is strictly of Indian usage, and you will find no non-afghan who is not of Indian origin using it. Most definitely NOT an Afghan using it for himself as it is derogatory of nature. -
taken from "The Pathans" by Sir Olaof Caroe.

Pathan was a word used by the Marajah of India on a group of Afghans who used to kidnap the pretty girls of India and forcibly marry them.

                    مختلف علاقوں میں مختلف لہجوں
میں بولی جاتی ہے۔ مگر دو اہم لہجے یہ ہیں:

سخت لہجہ یا یوسفزیوں کا ٹکسالی لہجہ: اس لہجے میں دوسرے زبانوں سے آۓ ہوۓ الفاظ

                    کوسہ بولتے ہیں۔

Its a good article but some parts of the articles dont represent the reality but based on generalization or misconception or may be a deliberate conspiracy against Pashto language.

The above part says that Pashto is spoken in different accents in different areas. Pashto has various dialects and accents but this may not be exaggerated otherwise people wont try to learn Pashto as they will be afraid of this dialects or accents syndrome. This is good that the writer explains that there are two important dialects.

This is totally wrong that in the hard dialect the words taken from other languages are pronounced differently. Its a blatant lie. Its the other way round. Words derived from other languages with very few exceptions are pronounced exactly the same way in both the hard and soft dialects.Koshash, khalis, khar, etc are pronounced the same way as in the original languages. The difference is only in pure Pashto words NOT taken from other langauges like kha-sha, gira-jira etc. Jawan is not a pure Pashto word rather zwan is more common in all dialects. Yes Z , CHE, TSE, and J sounds are often differently pronounced in some words.

However at the end of the article there is a correct explanation for the pure Pashto letters.

At present, I prefer to call myself a Human, as Pashtun has become a very shameful name and people, I wish to be a Nobody and live without an Identity, and live somewhere on top of a Mountain, and invent a new language, and maybe one day my new people wont be as stupid as we see Pashtuns are at the moment.

People like us are needed to make it clear to the world that there is a good side of pakhtoon's... and the belief in the minds of people around the world is generalized by a few bad ones...if we dont want to be called as pakhtoon's and if we want to hide our identity then i see no improvement is the state of pakhtun people....

we shouldmake it sure when we meet new people to tell them our identity, the culture we belong to and also make them aware that a good number of pakhtoon's are educated and working or studying at different places around the world....

its not a shameful name please.......

people are making it shameful and its we who can try to make a difference...

to tell u the truth the place where i belong to we need to prove our citizenship in my country only because i am a khan.......

called in the police head quarter's crime branch for interview just to get a passport...

still we have not stopped calling ourselves pakhtoon....

                          Spogmai is quite correct.

The problem Pashtoons have had for several generations now is the outflow to other languages and cultures at the slightest opportunity and not enough care for the preservation and protection/development of our identity.

No need to be ashamed of being Pashtoon. It is the Urdufied Pathans and your Pashtoon-Farsiwans who are the prime examples of that kind of behaviour.

jeeeez, so much of hatred for anything Pakistani. I'm rather finding it a sin to be born in that land, but who should/could I complain!!???

Sounds almost as same as the problem with the word "mosque", as said to be a word derived from mosquitoes or something, with no one ever giving any source.

Its as same as one's experience of trying to understand about a religion, as on the way there would be so many people saying so much against different sectors (each one against the other) of that religion that one would rather become an atheist.

Now, someone could please tell me what language is the word "pathan" taken from, with the source of their information? And, no, not that paklinks sort of random site (actually the link provided doesnt even exist anymore), some encyclopedia or dictionary of international standards.
