  • Verbs "to do"

    Hello.

    I have just started a Pashto Basic Course here in Melbourne Australia and I am struggling to understand the Verbs "to do kawel part that we covered in today's lessons.

    I understand it is used as part of some compound words such to talk, to work, to make a phone call etc but I do not understand how it is used in a sentence.

    The only examples I was given today were very basic:

    I talk: ze xabere kawem;
    You talk: Te xabere kawe;
    We talk: Munz xabere kawu; etc

    I understand kawel changes at the end of sentences depending on the object, but I am really struggling on how else it can be used in more complicated sentences, such as "I will talk to you" or "we will talk to you".

    Could someone please provide me an example or two on the correct use of the Verb to do kawel in a more complicated sentence? A simple 'Ze xabere kawem' just isn't enough to properly understand it's use.

    Thank you for your time.

    za/ze ba ta/tasu sara khabare/xabere kawum.

    "ta" is used if the object is singular (sometimes if the object is an elder or a respected person then "tasu" is used instead of "sta" even, if the object is a sigular.

    "tasu" is used for plural object. "ta" instead of "sta" is also used in pashto for "you".

      yes. The verb Kawel can be used in many different sentences such as using of the verb as Ger-rand or verb-ing. Also, it can be used in present perfect, past perfect and passive sentences, in fact in 16 different tenses. I write two examples to show you the way that it can be used, and you will learn them step by step. ما کار کړی دی/ ما کار کړی وهٔ whenever you use the perfective form of Auxiliary کول with the present or past TOBE verb as دی or وهٔ, it gives you the meaning of the past participle form of the verb as eaten, driven, done and etc. Like ما کار کړی دی it means that I have worked. ما کار کړی وهٔ it means that I had worked. since, the helping verb کول is a transitive, in the past tense it is object verb agreement. It means that the verb کول matches the object of the sentence. If you use helping verb کول + شول it means "Can," and it can be used in different structures. As we can say, زهٔ کار/ خبرې کولی شم since, we use this sentence in the present action, and we have an intransitive helping verb, which is شول, then the sentence must be Subject Verb Agreement. It means that the subject needs to have its personal ending. Hope it helped you a little bid, if it did help you, let us know we can help you through this...
      Good luck,

      Nazari

        @John Roberts
        You may check the thread "Conjugated verbs" and my posts in Pashto Language threads... I think they can be useful.
        And please feel free to ask if you have any questions about Pashto grammar.
