  • Is "iftikhar" Pashto word or not?

Quick question I would be grateful for an answer from noted language expert here, GYE, or any others who know regional languages:

I just read in a recent book about life among Pashtuns by an American author
the word - he spelled it with an e like Farsi -
Iftikhar to mean "honor" in Pashto.

I have heard that word used as a name for men in Pakistan, but
am not familiar enough to know how and where it is used
    as a noun.

    Opinions here?
If it is at all used in Pashto, then what would be the difference between iftikhar and ghairat ?

I am planning to write a review and want to pinpoint his errors, which are many...!

It is a persian name I think. Pashtuns sometimes have both Arab and persian names.

          What book is it?

            Wonderful !
            Thank you both a lot.
            Dari ! I didn't expect that.
Many Urdu names are related to Dari I guess?

I didn't think it sounded Pashto at all but I am no authority.
I want to call this commentator out on his strange errors because
he "PRIDES" himself -! - on being so expert on Pashtun culture based on I suspect very thin experience there.
I am displeased with this author anyway because he mocked God in the book and hates Islam.
So what was he doing hanging around Pashtuns then?!
Ego obviously, to get a "scoop".
I suspect that Allah [swt] wanted to wake him up, for this TV journalist and writer got caught within a few hours of his trip.
He was held captive by them for awhile
by some small commander and narrates his tale so annoyingly tediously
and with so much dislike for Afghans it SEEMS, that I want to figure out
            what was behind his story.

Thanks = oh now I saw the other two replies.
I'll tell you in a minute which book

                Thanks for asking.
It's ironic: it was this book which brought me to PF.
I looked up one of his biggest blunders regarding the word
which he wrote "malaak" on google and somehow PF arose.
So I thought I would ask people here to confirm my skepticism
as I always heard it pronounced with accent on the first syllable,
and to check other bizarre concoctions of his.

The book must have not made much of a splash, so you may not
                have heard of the title.
                it's called :
Captive: My Time as a Prisoner of the Taliban

The author is Jere Van Dyk, who is better known to the general US
public and TV viewers, as he was a regular commentator for CBS news on
                Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Though I wouldn't say this elsewhere, it shows the absolute scarcity of
                even reasonably well-informed American consultants.
He brags too much about knowing everything about Pashtuns in the book.
So I wanted to verify that my skepticism of that is well founded.

I was just re-reading his account last night, thinking to give it another chance in case I was too critical the first read through back in early July last year.
I want to be fair, but there are so many negatives !

Iftikhar is Arabic it comes from the root word Fa Kha Ra (fakharah) which means to respect or honor.

^Thanks - could that then be one of the many Arabic words which
                      got incorporated into Dari ?

Aha, so Iftikhar is respect in the sense of pride and honorable.
But it's not like a Pashtun would covet
                      maintaning his good "iftikhar" -
instead, he would treasure keeping his ghairat, right?
Am I somewhat close to getting this?

                        Unknown,
do you remember which one it was ?
Maybe so and i didn't see it.

Before arriving to PF, I had seen only the Frontline one because it featured
the commander I had gone with way back before the current problem.
After that, I have seen only the ones posted here,
often by GYE, who is quite diligent about dredging up all productions
related to Afghanistan even the least widely known for members to view.

That reminds me I never looked at the other parts of the Corruption series...

So do you happen to recall which one? They get blurry after awhile who did what, I know.

Many words in modern Pashtu and Dari are originally Arabic words which were slowly introduced after Islam came to this region.
And I don't know why so many Pashtuns think that these are Dari words?
