Malgariya, ze and dzeem are pronounced differently. The correct pronunciation is 'za ba janat ta da pukhto sara dzam'. There is a subtle difference here. You have to say 'Dzadzai' and 'Dzadraan' and 'Tsomra' and 'Tsanga' and 'Tsa', and you have to say 'za' and 'zamaa' and 'sabaa' and 'zaabal' and 'zurmat'.

I agree with Yousafzai here on the latter part of his post. Words are written, read, pronounced and understood differently by different tribes among Pakhtuns. As for these two letters, there is little difference between them in terms of pronunciation. From what I know, the zey has a sharp sound that comes from the tip of clenched teeth, and the zeem has a more heavier sound that comes from between the tip of the tongue and teeth. Basically, the difference is less than the similarity of pronunciation.Originally posted by Yousafzai Pakhtun View PostNo, there is no difference between Zey and Zeem in terms of pronounciation.........The only difference is that Zeem is used in those words which has double pronounciation......like i will take your sentence:
Za' ba jannat ta da pukhto sara zam......(زۀ به جنت ته د پښتو سره ځم) now this Zam (ځم) is pronounced as "Zam" and "Jam" as well ....Marwat tribes use the latter i.e Jam.....

Yea i agree while writing in roman one have to differentiate between the two by writing D and T before the word as you did......but my question is how will you pronounce Zey and Zeem to a kid to show him the difference between the two? (the tongue touches the upper row of teath in each case) ....These are two different alphabets which often gives the same sound in words....as is the case of "Cat" and "Kake" in english where C & K are different letters but here they have the same sound....
Actually the discussion was not about the difference between Zey and Zeem, the point was that Khateez should be written with Zey or Zeem?(Whats your opinion?) The moderators missunderstood the point and She made a separate thread with the name "Difference between Zey and Zeem in pakhtu"........

I am of the opinion that khateez and lwadeez should be written with zey as they are more commonly said, read and understood in that form. Of course, the rule pertaining to these letters varies from word to word and tribe to tribe.Originally posted by Yousafzai Pakhtun View PostActually the discussion was not about the difference between Zey and Zeem, the point was that Khateez should be written with Zey or Zeem?(Whats your opinion?) Jaanana, you can pronounce 'dzeem' by touching your tongue to the 'taalu' ever so slightly. ( I cant describe it any better). Try it. Say 'zaabal' and the and then say 'dzaadran'. You can feel the difference quite easily.Originally posted by Yousafzai Pakhtun View PostYea i agree while writing in roman one have to differentiate between the two by writing D and T before the word as you did......but my question is how will you pronounce Zey and Zeem to a kid to show him the difference between the two?
