I will tell you on this page a tale of conflict, which is as old as time itself; it is a never-ending battle. Perhaps it does end after we die but we can never know for sure, just like the unbelievers’ claim that we do not know about the afterlife. This story can take place at any given moment in history and in any inhabited place on this earth. It is a story that both you and I have lived, maybe more than once in our lives. Here it is:
Before he was even born, his parents had felt his presence. He caused them to constantly argue and bicker. Once he had been born, his parent’s life became much worse as he fell upon them like a heavy burden falling from above. Though this does not mean that he came from above; he was destined to become a creature of hell. He was a demon of the worse kind – an innocent one.
Indeed there are innocent demons; the so-called “poor devils” are those who themselves were pure and innocent but were forced by society to become examples and personifications of sin and evil. This particular one, was Conflict. He was not bad at heart; he did not harbour any ill intentions.
However, he was cursed by the people as being unlucky for them; bringing hatred, violence and death wherever he went. For this reason, the village people had decided to throw him out to the jungle once his parents had died. His unfortunate presence, or so they thought, caused his father to murder his wife in her sleep and then kill himself by drowning. Conflict wept like any other child.
Sadly, the villagers could not see the innocence in his eyes and neither the tears falling from them. They grab a hold of the boy and dragged him to the jungle where wolves and other beasts lurked. They hoped that the animals would eat him. Verily, the child had accepted the label bestowed upon him and no later than his arrival in the wretched jungle, the animals began to attack each other.
Except for the demon child, every living thing in the jungle had died. The boy, by now, was used to being blamed for bringing death and destruction. He thought nothing of this. All he did was make a meal out of the dead animals. Free meat was a luxury for these poor village people and the boy ate.
Another demon whispered in the boy’s ear to keep on eating until and even after his stomach was completely bloated. That was Gluttony, who had spotted the boy while flying around the skies with his six other demon brothers. They all came down onto the ground where the boy Conflict was sitting. They introduced themselves as Lust, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Pride. The Seven Sins.
Next, the demon Sloth told the child that he should now rest for a whole day. The boy obliged and when he woke, Envy started mocking the poor boy since he had nothing of his own while the village children had toys to play with. Wrath added to the already strong mix of emotions by sprinkling oil on the fire. Greed told him to get some toys. Lust said to take revenge on those who wronged him.
The boy set of towards the village that had rejected him. The child knew that even if he just walked around the perimeter that would be enough to bring death to the people. Many died that night but the boy did not seem content. He did not feel good about killing so many innocent people this way.
Fair enough that the ones who were cruel to him got what they deserved but something was missing. He thought long and hard about what he would do next as an old woman begged him for mercy. He kicked her very hard in the face and laughed. Then he knew what he was going to do.
Conflict burned the whole village to the ground. He was very happy about what he had done. He stood proud over the ashes of his success. The village people had made a monster by destroying a boy’s life and then the monster in turn took its revenge and destroyed them. There is a lesson here.
