ISI/PAKISTAN ARMY AND PASHTUNS, TO DISCLOSE THE MYTH AND TO DISCOVER THE REALITY
My aim is to reform the Pashtun society with modern education, democracy, human rights and other modern concepts compatible with Pashtunwali and the religion of Islam (faith, worship and ethics). One hindrance that I found in this reformatory process is the blame games of Pashtun intellectuals and politicians who blame others especially Punjabis, Tajiks, ISI, CIA, Pakistan, Iran, USA, Pakistani Army and Afghan Army and other forces. This is why I am writing this series of articles to debunk this blame game and to invite Pashtuns to reform themselves instead of blaming others.
One of the scapegoats for the problems of Pashtuns is ISI and Pakistani Army. I usually see that Pashtuns blame ISI and Pakistani army for our problems but I don’t see any concrete arguments in this regard except the supposed involvement of ISI in the rise Taliban as their strategic asset. Apart from this we just label ISI but I really don’t understand why ISI being an organized intelligence agency will create such a mess for it self making 14% population (Pashtuns) in Pakistan its enemies and the majority in Afghanistan? I don’t see any reason why ISI is bent upon ruining Pashtuns? There may be some few and far between cases, but there may not be an inherent enmity between ISI and Pashtuns as such.
I want to explain here once again that I don’t have my own agenda or interest in this whole discussion but the only interest I have is to reform Pashtun society by my management theory that fault always does not lie with others, we ourselves are responsible for our own problems in majority cases. I see Pashtuns generally blame Punjabis, ISI/Pakistani army, Tajiks and USA for their problems. Some may blame more Punjabis, some more Tajiks, or ISI etc but I want discover this blame game and to know how these so called anti Pashtun forces are responsible for the ruination of Pashtuns?
I also have an academic interest in this whole issue and I seek the information on the so called Pashtun enemies and those who blame them may build a case against these pseudo adversaries of Pashtuns as the burden of proof lies on those who blame. I want collection of all arguments against ISI/PAK ARMY in one place, this way we may understand the reality of the situation. I see many Pashtun friends accusing ISI/Pakistani Army of destroying Pashtuns but I don’t see any argument to prove their point. We may not accuse ISI/Pakistani army and may concentrate on our own introspection and self criticism for their development and betterment
The role of ISI in the rise of Taliban in Afghanistan is understandable upto some extent but it was something momentary and every state has the right to do whatever suits it. Pakistan always wants a friendly government in Afghanistan so that to concentrate on India (although some times a flawed approach) that’s why it supported Taliban at that time but it was a political support. Now ISI and Pakistani army is bent upon extirpating Taliban in Pakistan. We may appreciate the role of ISI and Pakistani army in this regard.
What I don’t understand that why ISI/Pakistani Army is the born enemy of Pashtuns is this enmity is eternal or temporary, depending on the situation where it suits ISI/Pakistani army and is ISI that much powerful and resourceful that it can control rather kidnap almost 70 million Pashtuns and do whatever they want with Pashtuns.
ISI being a secret organization, expert in its work, why will create bad feelings against it by a 14% Pashtuns in Pakistan and the majority of Afghanistan by doing things which Pashtuns don’t like , is it not counter productive , why it is bent to destroy Pashtuns and do things against Pashtuns interest in Pakistan and Afghanistan. ISI should guard interests of Pakistan instead making its own country fellows the Pashtuns against Pakistan and create enemies in neighboring Afghanistan.
I further don’t understand that why Pashtuns are this much gullible, innocent and simple that always ISI becomes successful in playing with Pashtuns in case we suppose that ISI/Pakistani Army is the enemy of Pashtuns and do Pashtuns have no blame for their problems, is it always ISI to be blamed and that why Pakistani army was not killing Pashtuns in past why now in Swat, Bajaur, Kohat etc. Is not it that now that some Pashtuns there have become terrorists, and it becomes the duty of Pakistani army to play their role, which is something normal for an army to fight against state enemies.
I am not ISI/Pakistani Army spokesman but I sincerely don’t understand this blame game and cant understand that ISI is the worst enemy of Pashtuns or its mere a propaganda and a way to divert the energies of Pashtuns from reformation and development and this way the politicians and intellectuals avoid their responsibilities and shift their burden on blaming others for their own failures. My main interest in this whole issue is to tell the Pashtuns that instead blaming others like ISI, correct your own selves. ISI, USA, Tajiks, Punjabis, armies, agencies, all these cant do any thing if Pashtuns are strong enough to counter them.
The solution is total eradication of religious extremists. We must exterminate and uproot the evil of Taliban in whatever way possible. Whatever which is being done now by Pakistani army against Taliban is fully justified although there may be some flaws in their tactics and strategy. The war against these extremists that each Pashtun should fight, Pakistani army is fighting. If they won’t fight this war, then think we will have another Taliban government in Pashtun areas of Pakistan who will carry us thousands of years back to the Stone Age with their obscurantist policies and thinking
I wrote above about the role of ISI and Pakistani Army in Afghanistan, and I also recognize its role in the present day situation in Pashtun areas in Pakistan but just put your self for a few minutes in the place of a responsible ISI decision maker, will you not defend the interest of the country whose interests you have to protect, definitely you will, for this ISI is paid but as I said earlier that why we Pashtuns let these forces to play against us. We provide them the chance to do so. Fault lies with me not with others.
I think like the judge who sends the owner of the house to jail, the robbed one, not the robber, not the thief, because the owner let the thief to rob him. I m not here to prove the innocence of no one, I am not pleading the case of any one here. In the depth of my heart I want to see Pashtuns out of this quagmire and for me the panacea is coming out of the blame games, and recognizing ones pit falls and trying redressing them in a creative and pragmatic way. We don't concentrate on the real issues and just do criticism for the sake of criticism. What I always propose is the internal strength of Pashtuns that no body can play with them and can exploit them.
