  • PF Book Club?

We should have a virtual book club on PF. Only serious and dedicated individuals, please, and no joking around here. Here's what I propose.

    WHAT:
    A virtual book club.
We'll list some books that we think others should read and then have a discussion on them. They can be for pleasure or attaining more knowledge.

    WHY: Why not?
Now, the books can be about ANYTHING, but I prefer that they be something we (the reader who is recommending it) disagree with so that we can have more to talk about. If not, however, no worries; there's no harm in reading something we absolutely agree with, of course. When selecting the book, we could also perhaps refer to the list of books that people recommend everyone should read at least once in their lifetimes.

We'll try not to select books that are either banned in some countries or unavailable otherwise, unless they're available online or something. That way, all interested individuals can read the books.

    Guidelines
There will be rules when we discuss the books. They won't contravene PF guidelines but will instead reinforce them. For example, no personal attacks, no mocking others, no bashing religions/culture/individuals/etc.

    How: On a consensus
We'll try to please everyone as much as we can, but since it's often impossible for everyone to agree on the same thing or vote for the same thing, I think it might be fair to go with the majority's decision. Everyone will have an equal chance of suggesting the book of the month, but please don't be discouraged if the book isn't voted for for the time being. We'll take about a month to read the book and come back and open a topic on it. (I am envisioning a new sub-section for the book club alone, then.) The time would also depend on how long or short the book is, though. But I think at least a month would be a good enough time to give participants a chance to read it.

I know we're all busy with our lives, studies, work, families, and other obligations, but reading could be something that we look forward to after a long tiring day, yeah?

    Feel free to opine.

LOL you are a mod :P

I think this is a great idea. I would love to join a book club, but i am afraid i might not be consistent with it. But i definitely support it.

But what if the book is not available for all to read?

The only fiction I read are the English classics or stuff from 18th and 19th century Russia.

We should start with Stephen Hawking's The Grand Design. The book has glossy pages and pictures. Ready for the HuD. Who can resist?

        What say ye, o commoners?

Oh and I hereby present a bill for the amendment of clause 3 of act 4 of your charter where it states:

For example, no personal attacks, no mocking others, no bashing religions/culture/individuals/etc.

I propose that this clause be deleted and replaced by something that I like.

So when do we begin? Roshina, is it possible that we can discuss the book on the phone? Just you and me. Or perhaps if I can drop by, you can make me some shney chai and I can tell you the meanings of the difficult words that you underlined?
"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be".

"Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives".

          Q/R. Sounds good.

Do we start off with making a book recommendation or deciding who is "in" the club first before making a book recommendation?

I'm soo down! But please please no fiction! =)
"Do not lose hope in adversity and complain that God singled you out for punishment, remitting others guilty of worse sins. Your present state could very well be His intent to elevate your spiritual station. Or He could just be testing your faith. Everyday that you persevere, you grow closer to perfection. Thus, your present despair may be the beginning of an infinite blessing". - Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!
