even our postgraduate system is different ... take medicine for example
here in the UK on graduating your a Dr at the age of 23...you then go to do your "housejob" or FY1
this comprises 4 months attached to a medical rotation 2 expose you 2 medical specialities, 4 months in a surgical speciality and 4 months optional ( I did obstetrics and Gynaecology) but you can do more of medicine etc
you then get fully registsred with the GMC
You then move up 1 rung of the medical hiarachy and become an SHO Dr. Your 1st yr as an SHO dr is again made up of 3 4 month attachments but this time you can do all three in whatever takes your fancy ( this is prepareing you for specialisation) I did Geriatric medicine, Public Health and Trauma and Orthopedics. You then choose what you want to specialise in .... most specialities take 7 years to reach the top ( 2 further years as an SHO Dr in said field, followed by 5 years as a registra Dr ) before you become a consultant
as you move up the resposnibilities increase and so does the pay.... you must also pass the exams of the royal college of your chosen speciality... Exception is family medicine which only takes 3 years to complete... thats 2 years as an SHO Dr and 1 year as a Registra Dr
